Tunnel money hole

On Tuesday, March 2, the City of Seattle and State of Washington hosted an open house so visitors might come to understand the worth of replacing the Alaskan Way Viaduct with a tunnel. In the Seattle aquarium, across from the viaduct, people jockeyed for position between easels and gurgling marine exhibits, trying to glimpse drawings of a future Alaskan Way, wide, sunny and absent of the waterfront's hulking concrete wall.

Expert explanations came from members of the city and state's departments of transportation.

Petrol plans for Crown Hill?

Some Crown Hill residents are trying to convince the city to expand a proposed pedestrian zone to stop potential construction of auto-oriented businesses, which they said could destroy the community's chance of becoming a pedestrian friendly zone.

Neighbors have been worried for years about the possibility of a Safeway discount gas station on the store's lot at the corner of Northwest 83rd and 15th Avenue Northwest.

The idea was first proposed in 2001.

Think globally and eat locally

Jenny Heins and Andrea Faste

Have you ever heard of the 100-mile diet? Move over, South Beach! This is about local farming sustainability and refreshing common sense, not a weight reduction fad! We're talking about limiting what you eat to food grown within 100 miles of where you live. Here's why:

Not long ago over half of all North Americans lived on farms. Now family farms have given way to a food industry dominated by big corporations, leading to decreased variety, nutritional value and flavor in the food we find in our grocery stores.

Two wrongs don't make a right

Watching professional athletes at peak performance is a thrill. The Olympic Games, just completed, gave us many moments of vicarious pleasure as skaters zoomed across the ice and skiers raced downhill at 80 milers per hour. It was fun to watch on TV, but I imagine it was much better standing on the sidelines in Turin.

I have gotten this same heightened sense of joy at the ability of human beings to perform feats of physicality that I can only dream of doing at Safeco field and at Key Arena.

Exercise: Just Do It

Here at the Organic Dog Ranch, Mrs. Anthony is known around the house as 'The Punisher.

It's not because she slaps my hand when I reach for a fourth cookie from the jar, but for her brutal nature with exercise machines.

As for me, I usually claim that the carpentry work I do is what keeps me toned up, but mostly, just pushing 50 is enough exercise for me. When The Punisher slips into her lycra leotard, the sweet, demure little thing I married turns into an Olympic Triathlete.

Neighbor kills dog, shatters Browns Point family

Through tears of mourning and frustration, Gretchen Davis continues to search for answers.

Gretchen and her family want to know who, and more importantly why, someone in their neighborhood shot and killed their beloved dog, Sally, with a pellet rifle.

"This isn't supposed to happen here," said Gretchen, still visibly shell shocked from the violent act that occurred on February 23.
