Peace activists met at Ballard's Trinity United Methodist Church on Monday, March 20, to read aloud grim, often-contradictory descriptions of the war with Iraq. The meeting was one of 42 held in cities around the world to coincide with the third anniversary of the invasion and subsequent occupation of that country by the United States and its allies.
Readers signed up to take turns reading passages from Eliot Weinberger's book "What I heard about Iraq," a collection of published quotes from U.S. and British officials, U.S. soldiers and Iraqi civilians.
The Seattle School District Community Advisory Committee began the complex task of recommending which K-8, alternative and elementary schools to close, consolidate or relocate at their first meeting Monday, March 20. Some members feared their May 26 deadline wouldn't be long enough to solicit adequate community input.
So far, a series of community meetings and weekly gatherings with the committee as a whole will roll out the closure/consolidation plan.

In golf, the Ballard Beaver girls lost their first match of the season to Roosevelt by just one point 291-292. Despite the loss, the team showed great improvement over the 14-point loss to the Roughriders last year and that is a sign of progress.
"We had fun, it was a nice day. We could not quite catch them," said Head Coach Stan Geddes.
Since Geddes took over the program last season, the Beavers are making steady progress and expect to top their four-win season from a year ago.
