Drum roll please, kids

With every beat of the drum, students at Loyal Heights Elementary made a lot of noise while learning about Taiko, the Japanese art of drumming last week.

One World Taiko, led by husband and wife team Gary Tsujimoto and Nancy Ozaki, are working with the children as part of a Washington State Arts Commission funded Artists in Residence program.

Last year the students learned about jazz from guitarist Michael Powers.

Of barber shops and blood-letting

Dan Huckins comes into 2-1/2 Happy Barbers as he has every month for a decade. Huckins is a quick-witted senior who prefers the barbershop experience to salons. He lives on Phinney Ridge, but makes the trek across to the Ballard barbershop anyway.

"You trying to stay out of trouble?" Barber Scott Ommen says to his customer.

"I'm trying to, but it ain't easy," Huckins says, easing into one of the shop's vintage green leather barber chairs.

Like a matador, Ommen swoops a hair cape around Huckins and whirls into action, comb and razor in hand.

Ballard's Bike to work was a big success

Dear Editor: A big congratulations to the over 700 bicyclists who were counted at Ballard's two Bike To Work Day stations on Friday, May 19th. And many thanks to the volunteers who staffed the BikeSport station at the Ballard Bridge and the Friends of the Burke-Gilman Trail station along the BGT. It was inspiring to learn where passing bicyclers were headed that day: Kirkland, Eastgate, Renton, UW, Tukwila (can you imagine bicycling every day from Ballard to Tukwila?

The fog of war

I was at the water cooler the other day when Rebekah said "If you want to find a story, get out of the office." She was passing on an old piece of journalistic wisdom that I chose to follow, only so far. I went down to Tully's Coffee on the corner with stacks of my needy files demanding attention, organization or excavation.

I took a seat behind a bearded man reading a magazine, who sat just behind another bearded man, filing papers in a binder. We all sat in a line, the only customers in a quiet caf/ on a quiet day on Market Street.
