Pest control - Gypsy moth hunt on Crown Hill

Gypsy moths are back on the radar in Ballard. The Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) is laying almost 1000 traps, predominantly in a 60-acre area of Crown Hill during the month of June. The effort is in response to finding an unusually high number of the moths last year.

"We caught 8 moths in the Crown Hill area ... that's a lot of months," said James Marra, the managing entomologist for the state Department of Agriculture.

Creating spaces for kids to find nature

The Olympics shone in the distance as we waited at the ferry terminal, two car seats and too many adults in an old Camry. My brother's thoughts must have been wandering to moments of greater freedom and elbow room. He'd heard of a study, he said, about the difference in creativity, intelligence, and independence between city kids - who mostly play in structured, adult-created environments; and country kids - who play on their own in forts and woods and the like.

This made sense to the adults in the car, raised as forts-and-woods kids.

Jerry's View

When I heard Lettie Gavin Gudmestad had hit her final typewriter key, I knew we had to have some special recognition for the work she did for the Highline Times as editor of the Women's section. This was back in the days when weekly papers had dedicated sections.

I knew Lettie well. She was crusty, outspoken and cantankerous and very talented. But her editor was the highly esteemed Reid Hale.

Reid is retired and living in Bothell so I called him and asked for some thoughts regarding the news of Lettie's demise.
