Legislator endorses levy

Please add my voice to those in support of the SeaTac fire levy.

Critical as it is that our firefighters be able to respond to the individual 911 calls within SeaTac, it is also increasingly evident that they are part of the larger fabric of a strong emergency response to wide-scale catastrophe, whether that means a collapsing viaduct, an earthquake, SARS at the airport, terrorism, or paninfluenza.

Federal and state government are spending literally millions of dollars to upgrade our emergency management system and preparedness; local jurisdictions must also do their part

The West has won-live music at last!

Ready for some rock with a side 'o fries?

No longer do you have to hop in the car for late night drives to see live music in Ballard, Belltown or Capitol Hill (and we thought life for Westside music fans was getting' good with the Georgetown's latest offerings).

Now, thanks to the new Skylark Cafe/ and Club on Delridge, we can have it all right here in the hood at a nice, affordable neighborhood price.

Energy on the ballot

Local environmental activists say an initiative that would require some utilities to get at least 15 percent of their energy from renewable resources by 2020 is a step in the right direction towards a large-scale fight against the effects of global warming.

Backed by hundreds of thousands in the state of Washington, Initiative 937 could also mean a big win towards decreasing the state's reliance on fossil fuels by increasing the use of natural resources like wind and solar energy, said Jody Grage Haug, chair of Washington's Green Party.

Beavers aim high at state

In girls swimming, the Ballard Beavers have the talent and depth to be one of the top teams in the state this season.

"We have a lot of talented swimmers. We have a lot of returns on the varsity and a good freshman class," said Head Coach Carlos Palacian.

Ballard is at a disadvantage with the Ballard Pool closed for renovation. The team has been going to the Helene Madison Pool at 134th Street and Meridian Avenue North for their practices.

Shorter practices have also been a problem. The end of the school day is now at 2:50 p.m.

A baseball life

A lifetime filled with the love of baseball has meant the world to Ken Proctor. Now he has published his own book, "Baseball Memoirs of a Lifetime" to share his experiences with the public.

Proctor, now 82 years old, says he grew up in the glory days of the classic baseball. The Bitterlake resident has met Jackie Robinson, John Wooden and Babe Ruth, just to name a few athletic celebrities.

Proctor was a multi-sport athlete at UCLA (University of California Los Angeles,) where he met Jackie Robinson. Robinson was a star in track and field, football and baseball.

Young and old in harmony

Ballard resident Richard Langford, 65 years old and Claire Lust, 15 years old may be worlds apart in age, but they share a love of music and perform together with the Pontiac Bay Symphony Orchestra.

Langford used to play professionally in Los Angeles, left the business for years and now teaches violin at the Music Center of the Northwest.

Lust is a sophomore at Ballard High School and has been playing the violin for six years.
