Gregoire proposes city vote on viaduct

Governor Christine Gregoire wants to let Seattle residents decide whether they want a tunnel or a new viaduct to replace the Alaskan Way Viaduct along the downtown waterfront.

The governor called for a vote before the end of the next legislative session. The Washington State Legislature convenes Jan. 8 and continues this year for 105 days or until about the end of May.

Her call for a Seattle vote immediately drew support from Seattle City Council President Nick Licata and the council's Transportation Committee chairman, Councilman David J. Della.

Four-period program to be altered by district

West Seattle High administrators say the school's four-period day schedule is supported by a majority of its staff and the proposal to modify it is being externally driven by a small percentage of parents who are pressuring the district to change it.

Based on complaints from parents and two program evaluations, which produced mixed results, the Seattle School District plans to develop a modified version of the schedule, said Irene Stewart, West Seattle's School Board member.

Students pressure business

A group of White Center students is making an effort to change the way people look at their community, literally, by pressuring local business owners to remove tobacco and alcohol advertisements from their store windows.

The students are part of the "New Start" youth program based in White Center that provides teenagers in the community with an alternative education program, career exploration services, and leadership development.

Survey finds very few people are upset by 'Merry Christmas' greeting

"Merry Christmas" is back on the lips of many retailers greeting shoppers this holiday season - much to the delight of the 32 percent of those who say they're offended when a store clerk who instead uses the generic but politically correct "Happy Holidays," a new Zogby Interactive poll shows.

Last year's decision by many retailers - including retail giant Wal-Mart - to curtail the use of "Merry Christmas" for fear of offending those who don't celebrate the holiday caused a backlash from conservative Christian groups as well as consumers.

Holiday Vashon/Southworth ferry schedule

Washington State Ferries customers traveling over the holidays will have plenty of opportunity to get to their destination as a Monday holiday means that many travelers will depart early, sailing on Thursday and Friday.

Others will wait and travel on Saturday and Sunday. Many will return home on Monday for the beginning of the workweek on Tuesday, so expect crowded ferries on Monday, Dec. 25, and Tuesday morning, Dec. 26.

Neighborhood chief named

Mayor Greg Nickels nominated Stella Chao, a longtime community leader, as the new director of the city's Department of Neighborhoods.

"Stella has a passion for bringing people together, building community and serving the residents of Seattle," Nickels said. "This is a city of great neighborhoods and strong communities.

Community service awards go to many

OK, I was warned but I let bad weather and an earlier commitment get in the way and I missed the Ballard Community Service Awards session last week. I had no idea that this would be one of the events of the year.

There were a lot, like a real lot of awards. Here we alter the script for the event to get as many names in as we can in the space allowed.

The Oz Award for extraordinary service behind the scenes went to three people.

Advocate Katie Dolan dies

Katie Dolan, a tireless advocate for the Northwest Center passed away on Nov. 11 and she won't be forgotten as memorial fund has been established in her name.

"She was a very strong influence here. She was a special person and was very determined. Nothing was good enough. She created change across the nation," said Sue Chaplik, development director for the Northwest Center.

Dolan, 82, was born on Oct. 31, 1924 in Seattle, where she attended Franklin High School.
