Ex-officer arrested for burglary

A former Des Moines police officer was arrested last week and accused of robbing a Shell gas station and demanding all the cash in the register.

Police said a surveillance camera caught the former officer in the act.

Des Moines police detectives reviewed the tape and identified their former co-worker and his vehicle. They said he had resigned from the force just 10 days earlier.

Kent police found and arrested the suspect, who was not immediately identified.

Bulldogs look impressive in game against Evergreen

From 0-14 to start last season, to 5-4 the final nine games of last season, including making it to the playoffs, to 2-1 this season thus far playing against higher ranked teams and higher classification teams.

That all summarizes the play of the 2A Foster Bulldogs boys basketball team, and, the latest win was a non-leaguer over visiting Seamount 3A team, Evergreen, 79-62, Friday.

Now how can a team go from so bad the first three-quarters of the season last year to so good the final quarter or so of it?

How the remarkable turn around? John Barbee.

A Christmas concert

Everyone should have a merry Christmas, right? There's a group coming to Seattle who can just do that for you.

It's a group of musicians called "The Coats." Some of you may have heard them as they have played in Des Moines and Kent.

Their Christmas concert at Benaroya Hall in Seattle is sensational. It'll be Dec. 14, 15 and 16. Guaranteed to make your holiday bright.

Bus parking questioned

Does the Metro bus system have the right to usurp the on-street parking spaces north of the Sixth Avenue Southwest entrance to the Burien Library?

I have noted only one bus at a time using this large space. Often the parking lot is full and people are waiting for available spaces. When the handicapped spaces are full these close-to-the-entrance spaces are crucial. There is a painted curb and signage preventing cars from parking there.

Why don't the busses proceed to 146th and park on either side of the street between Fourth and Sixth Avenues Southwest?

Fire concerns not a good reason

Some make the argument that Fire Department service would decline if Burien does not annex a portion of North Highline.

This is not a good argument. Recall, Burien annexed into the Fire District, not the other way around. That means the Fire District is autonomous. It has taxing authority. It can seek voter approval for new bond issues. The city of Burien has no authority over the Fire District.

So, if there is an issue related to needing a new fire station, the Fire District should put it up to a vote. Will the voters approve a bond issue to build a new fire station?

Rules changed for transplanting

A couple days of the deep freeze could have severely damaged gardens across Puget Sound. Below 20 degrees is not normal for the region.

Plants on the edge of hardiness and those hardy in less severe Zone 8 winters may have suffered.

But don't get out and chop things willy-nilly. It will be necessary to wait until spring to assess the full effects of the November deep freeze.
