District decisions could impact community groups

The Seattle School District is starting to shift its focus away from school closures to it's inventory of surplus buildings, including three in the Ballard area that the district could decide to sell or increase rents to make more money.

The district's real-estate portfolio includes buildings that serve as interim school sites and long- and short-term leases with third parties.

Silver Cloud in our future?

A six-story hotel building is being planned for along Shilshole Avenue Northwest, but before land-use permits are issued, the city's department of planning and development wants to be sure the hotel won't conflict with industrial uses in the area.

Plans have been in the works for nearly two years to build the Silver Cloud Inn, a 175-room hotel with ground-floor retail.

Yoshitani new Port director

The Port of Seattle Commission today selected industry veteran Tay Yoshitani as the Port's new chief executive officer, replacing Mic Dinsmore, who has announced his resignation.

Yoshitani has led Ports in Oakland and Baltimore and was deputy executive director of the Port of Los Angeles. Born in Japan, he is a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and holds a master's degree in business administration from Harvard University. He received airborne and ranger training in the Army prior to service in Vietnam, and was discharged with the rank of captain.

Beavers turn up heat on KingCo

When the Ballard Beavers moved up to the KingCo Conference in 2003, other teams defeated the boy's basketball team with regularity.

This season, under second year Head Coach Billy Rodgers, the Beavers playing their best basketball in years and are earning the respect of their opponents with a competitive mix of young players and veterans.

Players are benefiting from season two with Rodgers, Associate Head Coach Derek Fulwiler and the other assistants. "Now everyone trusts the coach a lot more.

Little League sign-ups

Last summer a team of seniors from the Northwest Seattle Little League went deep in into the playoffs by finishing in a second place tie in the Western Regional Senior Tournament in Salem, Oregon.

Although its still winter, the Northwest Seattle Little League is already thinking about baseball as they announced the sign-up period for local teams.

The league is now taking mail-in registration for children at least six years old and not yet 17 years old.

Prevention advice on school shootings

The onset of a new year has seen yet another unfortunate school shooting claim the life of a young student in Tacoma, WA. The National Crime Prevention Council (NCPC), the organization best known for its prevention education and icon, McGruff the Crime Dog, reminds students, parents, and teachers that we all must work together to reduce the violence in our schools.

"Our hearts go out to the victim, his family, and all those touched by this tragic event," said Alfonso E. Lenhardt, president and CEO at NCPC.

New face, new name

A change for the new year to Red Canoe Credit Union

Weyerhaeuser Employees' Credit Union will start 2007 with a new name, Red Canoe Credit Union.

WECU expanded membership eligibility in 2002 to include anyone who lives, works or worships in the state of Washington, as well as select employee groups in a tri- city area of Oregon.
