2007 CFO of the Year also sworn in as citizen

Did state flip-flop on tunnel?

The Seattle Department of Transportation had to file an official public records request with the Washington State Department of Transportation to obtain a copy of a contractor's review saying there are no insurmountable problems with the city's slimmed-down hybrid tunnel proposal.

State officials pronounced the hybrid tunnel plan unsafe because emergency vehicles would not be able to get through traffic during the morning and evening commute times.

White Center gang unit sought

A petition campaign to ask the King County Council to provide funds for a King County Sheriff's gang unit is underway.

"We hope to complete the drive by early March," organizer JoAn Cox said last week.

Mrs. Cox is the mother of King County Sheriff's Deputy Steve Cox, who was killed in the line of duty Dec. 2 while questioning a suspect in a house in White Center.

The man who fatally shot Cox was a known gang member.

Two new area parks get names

West Seattle has a new park with a new name, plus an official name for a future park.

Located at Southwest Brandon Street and 26th Avenue Southwest, Cottage Grove Park is named for the neighborhood where it is located. The small, rectangular new park has a plaza, pathway, play structure and grassy areas.

Cottage Grove Park is sandwiched between Puget Boulevard Commons to the east and Greg Davis Park to the west.
