Exploring 4-period day

The Seattle School District has convened a parent, teacher and student steering committee to explore modifications to West Seattle High's four-period day schedule to address ongoing concerns.

Based on a directive from the district's chief academic officer, Carla Santorno, the committee will need to reach an agreement for a modified schedule or the school could revert back to a six-period day, said Ramona Pierson with the district's department of education technology, research, evaluation and assessment.

The group met for the first time last Thursday at West Seattle High.<

A lot expected of new school head

After nearly three and a half hours of debate, the Seattle School Board formally adopted a set of 10 qualifications for a new superintendent last Wednesday, opening the door for a national search process.

Among other qualities, the next school chief should be committed to reducing the achievement gap, able to inspire trust and motivation and build leadership, the School Board decided.

Input from a series of public meetings with district staff and stakeholders were presented to the board and used as a springboard to define the list of "profile" requirements and one preferr

North Highline Council dumps one, adds one

The North Highline Unincorporated Area Council took in a new member and dismissed another.

Christine Waldman was appointed to take the position at-large that had been held by Deputy Steve Cox, who was killed in the line of duty Dec. 2. Cox was president of the council at the time of his death.

Members voted unanimously Feb. 1 to toss member Cynthia Ruiz off the council because she hasn't attended a council meeting in many weeks. Council bylaws state that members can be removed from the council if they miss three consecutive meetings without a reasonable excuse.

Birthing options important for women

By Lisa Chin

The conversation on women's reproductive rights often goes no further than access to birth control and abortion. Rarely do we think of birth under the banner of reproductive freedom. But it is.

Positive change is next to floral

The Ballard Market is one of the reasons I moved to the neighborhood - but that's another story.

At the last Fremont Fair I sampled Equal Exchange coffee and learned their cooperative was going to open an Espresso Bar at the Ballard Market. Where would they put it, I wondered? The answer: next to floral. What I can't answer is why it took me seven months to find a caf/ that seems to have been hidden in plain sight.

There was a frantic energy at Ballard Market on Super Bowl Sunday. The aisles were crowded; whoops and hollers were coming from the meat department.
