Lady Eagles rout Rainier

The Evergreen Lutheran Lady Eagles basketball team completed their regular season last Thursday with a 66-15 rout of Mount Rainer Lutheran.

Evergreen never looked back as they scored the game's first 27 points, not giving up a point until five minutes into the second quarter.

"You never want to coach in a game like this, but it happens. It has been happening all year," coach Jeff Kurbis said.

Senior Rachel Hansen fueled the Eagles' charge with 14 points and 12 rebounds.

Jerry's View - Meet 'Crash' Weinberger

Pete Weinberger is this lucky guy who survived two airplane crashes - and never got a scratch.

A West Seattle pilot, he was once a Canadian commercial airline pilot making a wintertime night landing in Calgary with 26 passengers. When he touched down in an oat field short of the tarmac the jouncing broke both wings off his plane. The whole fuselage nearly turned over but landed in a slithering, jack rabbit rock and roll. But it came to a halt without any serious injuries.

In Transition - Valentine's Day with friends and lots and lots of chocolate

Dating back to at least the time of ancient Greece, Valentine's Day and its international counterparts have been times for celebrating love, courtship, marriage and fertility. The holiday was most likely brought to North America around the 19th century by British settlers and is commonly associated with the giving of chocolates, roses, greeting cards, and jewelry.

Guess what all of this means? Valentine's Day is old; it has occurred on the same day of every year for over 100 years! Yet this fact does little to prevent it from sneaking up on every single one of us every single year.

Ideas With Attitude - Funny thing happened

As many of you know, I have been caring for my husband full time. Of course, I have taken advantage of the health aides who are so indispensable that one health care agency is actually called Visiting Angels. Another is simply Care at Home, which is the more down to earth representation of an agency that meets my needs. I recently called Visiting Angels to check on the credentials of a health aide and laughingly asked, "Are your health aides directly from God?

'Charlotte's Web' was great

After reading Mr. Bulloch's review of "Charlottes Web" in last Tuesday's paper I have to strongly disagree with his opinion.

Firstly, I feel that if the characters did not seem magical or their personality's real it is due to the lack of imagination a movie screen offers vs. reading a book. Yes, Wilbur did sound like a Care Bear, but if you haven't heard, Care Bears are suppose to be loveable and that's what Wilbur is all about. At the end of the day we want to save Wilbur from Christmas dinner.

Secondly, I think Dakota Fanning was perfect for the roll of Fern.

Thanks from Hickman House

Thank you Lori Hinton for the thoughtful story in the West Seattle Herald about the Hickman House and for sharing with your readers' ways in which they can support us through the Giving Tree at Capers.

The families arrive at Hickman House often traumatized and struggling to overcome the many difficulties associated with homelessness, domestic violence and poverty. We work with them to help increase safety, self-determination and social support.

Shelter condemned our Harley

I am writing to alert Seattle pet owners to be extra cautious when leaving on vacation; I learned the hard way that a trip to the Seattle Animal Shelter may prove lethal even when a pet is properly licensed and micro-chipped. Particularly if the pet is older or requires any sort of medical attention and the owner cannot be reached to approve life-saving care.

On the evening of Monday, Jan. 22, my nearly 13-year-old black lab male (Harley) got out of my yard while being cared for by neighbors as I vacationed in Mexico.

Vote No on tunnel, viaduct replacement

I am writing to urge your readers to vote against both replacement of the Alaskan Way Viaduct and the abbreviated version of the tunnel plan. It is disappointing to me that the papers have withheld the true facts on the condition of the existing structure. The viaduct is not crumbling at its foundations as stated recently in the Post-Intelligencer.

The facts of the matter are that the viaduct is only falling from the last earthquake in a short section of the viaduct at Yesler Way. This could be fixed by replacing a small section at that location.
