Dr. Klauser headlines writers' retreat

Do you think you have to write the Great American Novel the first time you set your pen to paper in order to be a writer? That's not how it happens.

Find out more about the writing world at the first-ever Federal Way Writer's Retreat at the Dumas Bay Center on April 27 and 28. The Center is located at 3200 SW Dash Point Road in Federal Way.

Task force backs 2 park levies

A citizens' task force recently recommended renewing the King County Parks levy, which will expire at year's end, and restoring routine park maintenance improvements.

The Parks Futures Task Force also recommended county investment in open space projects to help ensure the region's environmental health and water quality.

In its report, the task force recommended two property tax levies for an August 21 primary ballot.

Road spraying for weeds begins

The King County Road Services Division is scheduled to begin its roadside weed control program in Federal Way and unincorporated areas of the county on May 7.

As part of the program, certified technicians will perform controlled herbicide spraying along some road shoulders through the summer to reduce safety hazards for pedestrians, motorists and bicyclists, and prevent root systems from damaging roadways.

The spraying will also control noxious weeds that are toxic to some animals and pose environmental risks to native vegetation.

Federal Way fire receives grant

The fire marshal's office with South King Fire & Rescue is scheduled to receive a $2,500 grant on Thursday, April 26, to fund specialized equipment for a fire investigation vehicle.

Jerry Kenkel, vice-president and San Francisco engineering manager of FM Global, will present the check to Fire Marshal Ron Biesold and Investigator Laine McGee, at Headquarters Station 62, 31617 First Ave. S. in Federal Way, at a 3 p.m.

Funds offered for waterway protection projects

King County is offering grants of up to $50,000 for community projects that protect or improve watersheds, streams, rivers, lakes, wetlands, tidewater and upland habitat.

Projects may include water quality protection measures, stream, lake, wetland and shoreline restoration, water quality monitoring, and creating new wildlife habitat.

There are three types of grants: micro-grants for up to $500, "Small Change for a Big Difference" grants up to $2,500, and competitive grants up to $50,000.

Respectable first half for TJ fastpitch

Good times seemingly lie ahead for Thomas Jefferson fastpitch as the Raiders finished a very respectable first half season with a .500 record.

Now they have jumped into the second half of the South Puget Sound League North season with early victories, including over the visting Federal Way Eagles, 11-1, Thursday.

The Raiders improved to 5-4 on the season while the Eagles dropped to 2-7 in the SPSL North.

Federal Way opened the scoring in the Tuesday, April 17 game as Lalo Moralles struck in the fifth minute on a Tommy Osborn assist. Moralles then scored unassisted in the 10th minute and Andrew Hair scored in the 49th minute on a Kelyn Rowe assist.

Thomas Jefferson jumped back into it on an unassisted goal in the 60th minute on a D.J. DeWaele penalty kick.

Thomas Adrian Nils Alberg

May 24, 1915 - April 7, 2007, age 91, son of Swedish immigrants Julius Arvid (Johansson) Alberg and Hilda Elida Dahlquist Alberg, Tom was born May 24, 1915 in Noon, Wash.

He grew up with his sister June and cousin Ralph Renstrom on the Olympic Peninsula where his father had a logging mill. Tom graduated from Port Angeles High School at 15 years old in 1931. He later attended Western Washington University in Bellingham where he met his beloved wife Miriam Ann Twitchell Alberg who preceded him in death in 1999.
