Federal Way annexation vote slated for next week

Voters on both sides of the annexation dividing line will decide the issue on August 21, a date set by the Federal Way City Council last May.

The August 21 date coincides with the state primary election.

The combined population of the area south and east of the city is estimated to be just over 20,000 and the total area is approximately 4,400 acres.

Leading up to the election date in 2007, the city and county has been working on a joint effort to provide information to residents of the annexation area regarding differences in service levels and taxes and fees b

If Federal Way's mayoral system ain't broke, don't try to fix it

To the Editor:

I read in The Federal Way News today that a gentleman is gathering signatures so that the citizens of Federal Way can vote on changing the Federal Way city government to an elected strong mayor form of government rather than having a hired city manager.

It stated that this gentleman had a problem with the city that he would not elaborate on but he felt the change he was proposing would help avoid his type of problem.

I'm opposed to that change and I'd like to explain why.

The way I understand it, an elected Mayor would take over all th

Power of the people

Like lots of people, I have often thought that we could make use of the power of the sun and wind to provide clean energy to run the planet.

I take advantage of them in my own small way with a yard mounted windmill hooked to a pump in my pond and with a solar radio.

South King Fire & Rescue lid lift back on upcoming ballot

The South King Fire & Rescue District could save up to $1 million over six years if voters approve Proposition 1 on the Aug. 21 primary election ballot, according to Chief Al Church.

Proposition 1, a property tax levy lid lift measure, would allow the fire district that serves Des Moines and Federal Way to charge up to $1.50 per $1,000 of assessed property value for the next six years.

In the past the district has run the levy lid measure every year.

Young hero recounts wild chase

Still, on June 21, when he strolled out of Costco in Tukwila and heard a woman's screams, Bonifazi did what he insists anyone confronted with the same horror would do.

It all happened so fast.

Liberal solutions fail to solve housing problems

Failure to plan in advance on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part.

A sign posted in many government offices.

The dual problem of homelessness and an affordable housing shortage is real-especially in King County.

Conservatives and liberals alike can agree on this.

In fact, many of us are not far removed from a personal housing crisis should circumstances change abruptly in our lives.

Where conservatives part ways with liberals is not in compassion for these poor among us, but in how to solve the problem logically and effec
