Des Moines Marina upgrade explained

A recent letter to your newspaper has misrepresented the most recently approved City of Des Moines Marina Master Plan. Here is some information that hopefully corrects some of those errors:

The City of Des Moines has been working on the recently passed Marina Master Plan for over a year. Numerous public meetings of the council and Municipal Facilities Committee were held where this plan was discussed in 2006 and 2007.

Lora Lake action backed

The RCAA backs the Burien City Council and the Port of Seattle regarding suitability of the Lora Lake Apartments when the third runway goes operational-not without enormously expensive retrofitted sound insulation, which would take the place completely outside the category of "affordable."

It would undoubtedly be more cost-efficient to build new apartments, and of course, in a more suitable location.

It is unfortunate, to say the least, that the King County community at large has been on notice for years that the plans were to demolish the apartments.

Use fire levy funds wisely

This writer is very puzzled on how I should vote on Proposition 1, the Fire Department Levy.

Yes they do a very good and dangerous job for our community. But what I object to is how our tax money is spent on what I consider unnecessary and even luxury Items. For an example, in one fire station a painting or mural was painted on the wall at a cost $1,500. Or a fireman's sliding pole that goes nowhere.

Final phase begins on third runway construction

After years of confrontation, the major airport-related story now for surrounding Highline communities is economic development partnerships with the Port of Seattle.

Des Moines Mayor Bob Sheckler said last week that the port and Des Moines are cooperating in developing 90 acres in the city that once was to be used as a fill dirt area for the third runway at Sea-Tac International Airport.

The port operates the airport.

Burien is also working with the port to develop the city's northeast area that is impacted by flight operations, including the site of the Lora L

Highline School Board to vote on $168 million budget

Highline School Board members are expected to approve on Aug. 22 a $168 million general fund budget for the 2007-2008 school year.

There was no public comment on the budget proposal at an Aug. 8 public hearing.

New finance director Susan Smith Leland said the district will receive increased state and federal revenues, but will face a reduction in grants, particularly for elementary school counselors.

Enrolment is flat with 16,601 students expected to this fall, down slightly from the previous year, according to Leland.

Young hero recounts wild chase

Mike Bonifazi is quick to tell you he likes to avoid "the H-word" as much as possible. But it is hard to do these days because to many, he is a hero.

The recent Kennedy High School graduate had big plans upon graduation. However, risking his life to hunt a sex offender was not one of them.

Still, on June 21, when he strolled out of Costco in Tukwila and heard a woman's screams, Bonifazi did what he insists anyone confronted with the same horror would do.

It all happened so fast.
