Writer urges citizens to get involved

Get Involved Burien!

A few years ago I became more involved with my community. I started volunteering my time in projects and with organizations that moved me. I also got more involved in my neighborhood and I quickly found out what an impact I could have on it.

What I want to do is to get more people involved.

There are so many organizations and causes out there that need your help.

Reporter's "views" faulted

"The views of Ralph Nichols are his own, and do not necessarily reflect those of Robinson Newspapers." Is this statement true? Robinson Newspapers provides Mr. Nichols the opportunity to rant and rave about any issue that moves his narrow view of the world. Unfortunately for the Robinson Newspapers, Mr. Nichols slips in his personal views through sophomoric attempts at "objective" journalism. Take the Highline Times article on September 26, 2007. Slain deputy's mom wins back gang unit

King County Council members voted last week to re-establish a permanent gang suppression unit in the King County Sheriff's Office.

The original gang suppression unit was disbanded in 1996.

Council budget committee members also urged priority funding in the 2008 county budget for the gang suppression unit.

"Every community in King County has felt the impact of increasing gang violence, but for the White Center and North Highline neighborhoods, the reformation of the gang suppression unit has special meaning," said Councilman Dow Constantine, D-West Seattle.

Burien hotel idea rises again

The Burien City Council's dream of having a local hotel soon could become a reality.

Council members heard on Sept. 24 a presentation from the Alliance Property Group, a developer that hopes to gain the exclusive rights to the construction of a new hotel in Burien.

"There are a lot of things that this area has to offer that other areas don't and there isn't a single hotel," said Harley Searcy, CEO of Alliance Property Group.

Des Moines election case is settled

A $140,000 settlement in a case involving state campaign law violations prior to the 2001 Des Moines city election was announced last week by the Attorney General's Office.

TME Capital Group, Environmental Materials Transport and Monarch Enterprises Inc. illegally funneled contributions through then-Councilman Don Wasson to support the campaigns of Maggie Steenrod, Richard Benjamin and Gary Petersen.

Steenrod, Benjamin and Petersen were elected, creating a 4-3 council majority that favored construction of the third runway at SeaTac International Airport.
