Southwest community center holiday dinner

Community members enjoyed the first annual free Holiday Dinner that was held at the Southwest Community Center on Friday, Dec. 21st. The event included a fine hot turkey dinner, outstanding music, a break dancing exhibition, and of course Santa, teen Jordan Rayray, giving toys to happy kids. The attendees included a good mix of kids, young families and seniors. Here, excited volunteers grim after serving dinner.

Real learning is interactive

Once, the intellectual elite sat on the lawn at the feet of Socrates, listening and often questioning. Now students often sit in classrooms of brick surrounded by landscaped lawns in ever burgeoning college campuses meant to keep each generation of virile youth in virtual isolation for four years.

They have often been shielded from real life and the work that human beings were meant to engage in.

What better time of year to treat yourself to a funny book?

I have a tendency to devour mystery books full of excruciating forensic detail that can give me actual nightmares. Sometimes I have to step back and remind myself there are funny books out there that are the best relief from the hectic pace of the holiday season. Here are a few suggestions to give you the gift of a laugh and a smile to make the season bright.

Megaprojects critical to our economy

When the subject of transportation comes up, much of the state's political focus is on replacing the viaduct along Seattle's waterfront and building a new 520 floating bridge across Lake Washington. But there are other transportation "mega-projects" that need our attention as well.

For example, in Vancouver, the I-5 and I-205 bridges are critical to our economic vitality. These two bridges are the only connection between Vancouver and Portland where Interstate 84, the main east-west highway, and I-5, the main north-south roadway, meet.

How about a tax cut?

Mom to use her art to aid tot with liver transplant

Alissa, Skot, Jesse, Wilf and Mimi Pierson are just one family of the many thousands who are suffering this year.

Nine month old Mimi Pierson was diagnosed with liver cancer at three months old. Mimi received a liver transplant but now Scot and Alissa are burdened with all of the medical expenses and emotional toll that comes with Mimi's ongoing care as well as trying to give Jesse and Wilf the things many teens take for granted.

Alissa is a local girl who grew up in Kent and later resided in Burien. Alissa is also an artist.

Survey shows reaction to cops is 'generally positive'

The latest biennial survey measuring residents attitudes about interactions with Seattle Police and crime are generally positive, though there are still areas for improvement, say city officials.

This year's survey of 1,205 Seattle residents, conducted last spring, measured opinions on neighborhood quality, neighborhood crime, neighborhood policing, voluntary contact with police, involuntary contact with police, police effectiveness, police misconduct and respect for police.

New vanity plates ok'd

Vehicle owners in our state have a new option for having fun with their license plates and supporting worthwhile causes.

The Department of Licensing is now allowing our state's recently expanded selection of specialty license plates to be personalized by vehicle owners with messages of up to seven characters.

Personalized license plates aren't new - there are currently more than 85,000 vehicles registered with personalized license plates. Until now, however, personalized plates have only been available on standard plate backgrounds.
