Program gives little to hardpressed homeowners

By Paul Guppy

"On the surface it sounds good."

That was one lawmaker's first reaction to a law signed by Governor Gregoire that lets some taxpayers defer up to half of their yearly property tax bill. This lawmaker voted for the bill, but her initial skepticism was well placed.

Shameful reality

As a 57 year old native Ballardite, your story about Mr. Mason and a large population-at-risk like him, was eye opening and heart rendering and an even larger population of boomers are following hot on Alden's path.

I only wish the powers-that-be in Seattle would open their eyes and their hearts and stop with destroying entire neighborhoods and roots for thousands of us born and raised here - generations of us, and I fear for myself and others - it just might be too late.

Freshly paved street collapses in storm

The heavy downpour early last week that besieged the state did not spare Ballard as a mudslide collapsed the freshly-paved Golden Gardens Drive Northwest, the winding wooded road between Northwest 85th Street and Golden Gardens Park.

The collapse left behind a hole resembling a giant brownie with a huge bite taken out, and swallowed a Toyota. No one was seriously injured.

The road will be closed for several months.

The detour route to Golden Gardens Park is Northwest 54th Street to Seaview Avenue Northwest, then north to the park entrance.

Santa visits kids to start the holiday festive season

Ballard's favorite Santa Claus, Gordon Olsen entertained children and families at Bergen Place on Saturday to help kick off the holiday season.

With the Silver Bell Carolers singing holiday songs and Ballard Chamber of Commerce volunteers wearing their red and white Christmas hats, Santa arrived aboard a "Ride the Duck," vehicle that normally takes tourists around the city.

Santa quickly went to work greeting some children in strollers then settled down in a chair next to a Christmas tree.

Kevin Gordon Olsen, three years old was the first to sit on Santa's lap.

Kids get chance to sail on Sound

As the sun lit up Shilshole Marina recently, about a half dozen special needs children and family members embarked on two boats and sailed into the Sound. Each child had a turn at the helm while wearing a captain's hat. Under the watchful eyes of experienced sailors, they learned navigation and safety skills.

The Heart of Sailing Foundation, a not-for-profit serving the United States and Canada, sponsored the event, and kids ride for free.
