With the talent level more even in KingCo this season, the Ballard Beavers hope to make the playoffs for a third consecutive year and possibly make a run to state.
The Beavers played their first non-league game last Wednesday, beating Mount Rainier 72-36 with five players scoring in double figures. The victory may be a sign of good things to come for Ballard.
"KingCo is wide open this year," said head coach Karen Blair.
While the Ballard Beaver girls soccer team fell short of making the playoffs this fall, six players were named to the KingCo All League Team that was announced last week.
"It shows we have gained the respect of the league. The program is growing.

Friends of the Hylebos announced today that the inaugural HomeStreet Bank Tree Challenge raised $16,950 for tree planting efforts in the Hylebos Creek Watershed.
Donations included a $10,000 donation for tree planting in the Pierce County side of the watershed.
"The outpouring of support for Hylebos Watershed tree planting exceeded our wildest expectations," said Friends of the Hylebos Executive Director Chris Carrel.

This year, the Seattle Port Commission made environmental stewardship one of its top priorities.
The shortage of foster homes is so critical in the Federal Way-Highline area that, occasionally, social workers have children in foster care sleep on couches in their offices.
On rare occasions, they take these children to a hotel to spend the night.

Decatur Gators boys basketball is alive and well after they swallowed up neighboring host Todd Beamer, 76-41, Friday.
It wasn't that close.
After a rip-roaring start that had the Gators snap up a 21-3 lead as the first quarter ended, things merely changed in the second quarter to the Gators outscored the Titans, 26-13, doubling their second quarter point total and therefore leading, 47-16, at the half.
The Gators crowd was in this one from the get-go, early on shouting a chorus of sounds like, "Fundamentals (Clap, clap), Fundamentals"and "You got swatted.

Federal Way flew out to a fast start with an 86-61 win in preseason action Monday, Nov. 26.
Jeff Forbes paced the team with 20 points and Aaron Broussard backed him up with 17. Andre Barrington, Cole Dickerson and Isiah Umipig all hit 12.
