Edna Mae McKinney

Passed away on November 19, 2007.

She was born Nov. 4, 1915, in Three Forks Montana. As only one of three students in her graduating high school class to attend college, it was especially noteworthy for her to receive a BS from Montana State University. Edna was a Home Economy teacher in several Montana communities, before marrying George (Dick) McKinney in Seattle in 1942.

As a teenager during the Depression, Edna's parents encouraged their children to attend college no matter what the sacrifice. One legacy that she passed on was the significance of advanced schooling.

Construction crew breaks unreported natural gas line

Burien

November 27-A natural gas main was broken at a construction project shortly before 10:30 a.m.

A work crew for Southwest Suburban Sewer District severed the main at Marine View Drive Southwest and Southwest 164th Street, which had not been reported earlier following a "line locate" request.

No evacuation was needed, no one was injured, and the line was repaired and reopened.

Ballard bags win at Mount Rainier Gym

Not much positive to report after the Mount Rainier Rams were lopped off, 72-36, by the Ballard Braves in non-league girls basketball action at new, beautiful, stately, techno-artistic, fine Mount Rainier High School Wednesday.

But there were positives, and most of those were being shouted out by Rams coach, Bob Bolam, as the game began and the Rams were right in it to begin.

Senator wants broad look at property tax

By Jeanne Kohl-Welles

Last Thursday, Nov. 29, lawmakers met in Olympia for a one-day special session. With the regular legislative session only six weeks away, many in the public were understandably confused as to why this was necessary.

Representing 'We the people'

Our family came to Salmon Bay School seeking an education for our kids that was free from the constraining limits of one-size-fits-all curriculum and annual tests whose prescribed answers can never measure a child's curiosity and imagination, the very qualities which assure children their real place in the world as citizens and stewards.

The Wisdom Council was the first sign we had that we were in the right place and it's been a pleasure to convene this last council alongside my co-convener Cilla Scofield.

Our first series of Wisdom Councils was two years ago and since th

Evictions don't bother

developers

The answer to your Nov. 28 editorial, "Seniors Not Wanted?" is, "yes," if they can afford to buy their apartments when converted to condos. "No," if they can't. And most can't.

Condo-converters and landlords don't care who buys their condos as long as somebody does. If seniors can't afford to buy, then it's "legal" to evict them.

If developers have to evict low-income seniors they'll do it, they are doing it, and Seattle rubber-stamps the evictions.

New condo is approved

The Northwest Design Review Board has approved the design of a new six-story, 31-unit condominium for the northwest corner of 24th Avenue Northwest and Northwest 58th Street. Danielle Condominium is the newest addition planned in a two-block radius on busy 24th where several multi-level residential buildings have sprouted in the past few years, with more to come.

Across the street to the southeast, the QFC grocery story will be rebuilt below six levels of apartment units.
