Benjamin and Baar

Leti Baar and her dog Benjamin often walk near the beach at Lincoln Park. Benjamin is a Great Pyrenees and he's a pure bred. These dogs were originally bred to guard flocks on steep mountain slopes. "He's a wonderful people dog, said Leti," but he doesn't have a lot of interest in what you might have in mind for him to do. He'll fetch a stick maybe once or twice, but then he looks at you as if to say, 'What are you thinking?'." Benjamin is 12 years old and sizes up both people and other dogs pretty quickly.

Barred Owls in West Seattle and Camp Long

One of Camp Long's most popular programs is a night walk looking for owls, often called an Owl Hoot. That's because the most likely owl to see in our area is the Barred Owl, also known as the Hoot Owl.

Barred owls are large owls with round heads and no "ear" tufts. Their name comes from the brown and white bars across their chest. Feathers cover their legs. The barred owls' eyes are dark brown, while most other owls have yellow eyes. Their beaks are very small, so they are almost covered up by facial feathers.

Group discusses the threat of gangs

The newly founded Seattle King County Gang Prevention and Outreach Work Group says its goal is to collect anecdotal data from youth, analytical data from service providers, and statistical data from a hired consultant, then give it to the Seattle City Council next month.

"We are fighting against the national buzz about gang activity, that all kids are a public safety issue," said Darryl Cook, the deputy director of the organization Reinvesting in Youth. "Our focus here is not 'Kids are bad.' We are not profiling the kids, but empowering them, with the survey.

Texting now against state law

The Washington State Patrol says it plans to "vigorously enforce the state's new law against sending text messages while driving," now that the law is in effect.

"Texting while driving was always a bad idea," said State Patrol Chief John R. Batiste. "Things happen too fast on the highway to take your eyes off the road long enough to read or type a message."

Because texting while driving is a secondary violation, troopers cannot stop drivers if they see it occurring.

A productive stop

After pulling over a brown Ford van for a traffic infraction at Genesee and Avalon Way, officers hit the jackpot, finding two backpacks filled with high-priced electronic equipment, large sums of money (in $20 bills), a hidden compartment containing syringes and drug paraphernalia, a digital scale with heroin residue, several baggies of black tar heroin and a bag of flake cocaine and pills.

Finding the tall girl inside of us

By Lauri Hennessey

When I was 13, I knew I wanted to be a basketball star. I was tall - really tall. Basketball made sense. I knew I wanted to be the center of my junior high team. I could envision myself out there, feel the success I would have in the final seconds of the game.

But that vision didn't exactly work in a world with Laura Stocker.

Yeah, you guessed it. Laura was a fantastic player. She was a fantastic center. In fact, she was all-district champion or some such thing.

Characters of West Seattle

The house call

By Emily Williamson

Whittle, fiddle backs, quilted maple, spalted; these words are as foreign to our modernized world as such words as "hunting," and "made from scratch," yet they are still part of the everyday vernacular of Howard and Audie House.

Howard and Audie House have lived in Seattle for most of their lives. They have two daughters, five grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren. Howard, 86, was born in 1921. He grew up on a farm outside of Birch Tree, Mo.
