Raiders snag victory over Decatur

Thomas Jefferson worked hard to capture a 3-2 Class 4A South Puget Sound League girls tennis team home victory against crosstown rival Decatur last Wednesday.

Sara Lin took No. 1 singles for the Gators in a 6-1, 6-1, win against Averi Kitsch. Jefferson's Raiders countered with their No. 2 doubles tandem of Caroline Min and Kelli Nakamura stroking past Megan Lintelmann and Bianca Tercero, 6-0, 6-2.

The advantage turned in towards the Gators in No.

A story about trucks - Part III

I had the gas pedal nearly pegged to the floorboards to get the tired old pickup up to speed as I roared and rattled up the Maple Valley highway towards home.

And well before I arrived with my long sought after prize, I had concocted a plan to meld my two favorite trucks into one perfect throwback as a tribute to my youth.

I would take the box bed off of this '76 F250 and put on a new flatbed, so that it would have the neat lines of the tough truck I loved as a kid along with the maximized load capacity of my old '56 Flatbed.

Sometimes the facts hurt!

In the past weeks I have been writing a series of articles for the Federal Way News regarding the state of education in this state using my background of more than 10 years experience with the school boards here, the state boards, and my experiences in classrooms here.

Perhaps a little background beyond that may be helpful.

I have been a classroom teacher in Pennsylvania and New York and a district wide administrator in both states as well.

There have been comments both in writing and by phone to the "News" office that have been less than complimentary by some.

When it comes to car washing, City urges residents to clean green

It's spring! Time to break out the sponges and buckets for charity fundraising car washes.

But before you send all that oily, soapy water down the storm drain, Federal Way's Surface Water Management Division and the Puget Sound Car Wash Association (PSCWA) want to remind you that not only is this very harmful to wetlands, streams, and lakes, but it is also a violation of state, local, and federal pollution laws.

Unlike the sanitary sewer systems, water that runs into the storm drains goes directly to lakes, streams, and wetlands with little or no treatment.

Plant sale bloomin' in Burien

Give that winter-weary garden a makeover with uncommon plants and bargains from the fifth annual Bloomin' Burien Plant Sale.

Sponsored by Grassroots Home and Garden and the Discover Burien Association, the sale on the sidewalks of Olde Burien runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 9 and May 10.

Expect the unusual at Grassroots, according to owner Tina Larson.

"We're getting in a shipment of rose bushes in blues and purples that are new to the market," Larson said.

Grow healthy attitudes about money in youth

In many families, kids rule the roost when it comes to at least some household spending.

A study by the Center for a New American Dream found that a typical school-aged child will nag her parents nine times to get something parents had previously refused to purchase.

What's worse is that 12- and 13-year-olds nag up to 50 times after their parents have said no.

Growing rates of personal debt and bankruptcy show that an increasing number of Americans are unable to successfully manage their personal finances.
