Why are our schools failing our children? Part 15

Can the State Legislature fix our educational problems?

I don't think so! Results so far are confirming this.

While the State of Washington's constitution mandates that "It is the paramount duty of the state to make ample provision for the education of all children residing within its borders."

It doesn't define what ample means.

Then to further confuse the situation, School Boards are given the responsibility of educating those students within their districts.

Herein lays one of the basic problems of education in most states.

Performing Arts Center still a good idea for city

To the Editor:

A performing arts center will improve our quality of life and benefit the local economy.

I encourage our City Council to continue moving forward on development of a Performing Arts/Event Center.

As a resident and as a member of the Chamber of Commerce, I believe an appropriately designed facility will improve our quality of life and provide additional engine for economic development.

Our community needs a facility to accommodate larger events, which our schools, performing arts groups, and business needs, but currently must look outsid

Sometimes the facts hurt!

To the Editor:

In the past weeks I have been writing a series of articles for the Federal Way News regarding the state of education in this state using my background of more than 10 years experience with the school boards here, the state boards, and my experiences in classrooms here.

Perhaps a little background beyond that may be helpful.

I have been a classroom teacher in Pennsylvania and New York and a district wide administrator in both states as well.

There have been comments both in writing and by phone to the "News" office that have been less t

Man arrested for "acting funny"

1. Federal Way officers were covering their beat near 28800 Military Road South when they were contacted by a citizen regarding a suspect. According to the witness report, the woman told police the man, Nathan T. Pierce, was "acting funny" and was likely involved in some sort of drug transaction. Officers made contact with the man around 8 p.m on April 7. The man provided officers with a false name. When questioned about the factuality of the name he had given, the suspect eventually gave his correct name.

Meet Monkey

This four-pound Chihuahua prefers cheese to bananas, even though her name is Monkey. She got a lot of attention and pats on the head when Jessika Daly and her 7 year-old son, Quattro, accompanied their puppy to the Syttende Mai Parade. Monkey seemed to enjoy the crowds as much as they enjoyed her.

The Daly's are not sure where Monkey came from. It seems Dad was in cahoots with Santa when the young pup arrived last Christmas.

"We don't know if she was rescued or not, but we do know she came from the North Pole," said Quattro.
