On a gray Saturday, June 7, men and women gathered at the Des Monies Marina parking lot to compete, not for money or endorsement money but for pride, glory and the chance to test themselves in the Strongman Nationals in Utah later this year.
The top three from each weight class, ranging from lightweight in the women's to super heavy weight in the men's will qualify to participate in Utah.

The Des Moines City Council rescheduled on June 12 a public hearing about the proposed Highline View Estates development south of Highline Community College.
In response to the public hearing being rescheduled to July 3, Mayor Pro Tem Dan Sherman said, "We'll have fireworks two days in a row."
Des Moines will submit a grant application to the Recreation and Conservation Funding Board for an additional $17,000 toward the Des Moines Creek Trail Project, bringing the project total to $230,000.

Sunny Dorhofer of the South Highline National Little League Juniors flirted with a really, really perfect game, then still had a perfect game before she wound up with "only" the no-hitter and a shutout.
Dorhofer struck out every Renton batter she faced through two outs in the fourth inning before the string of 11 strikeouts to start the game ended on a ground out to second base.

U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Des Moines Flotilla No. 32 regularly offers Boating Safety and Seamanship courses at Mount Rainier High School.
They cover the full range of boating safety subjects, including federal requirements, basic piloting, marlin spike, seamanship and boat handling.
The instruction is free, although there is a nominal fee for the student text and work books.
