Gators grab a win over Graham-Kapowsin

It sounds biblical, and, if not that, certainly prophetic, what Decatur Gators girls soccer head coach Christy Gross said regarding her team’s season outlook after a 1-0 win over Graham-Kapowsin at Federal Way Memorial Thursday.

The Gators win over G-K improved themselves to 2-1 in the 4A South Puget Sound League South Division while G-K experienced it’s first season loss, dropping to 2-1-1.

“They are a good mix....” said Gross of her Gators team of young ladies, which are made up of eight upperclassmen and nine underclassmen.

Beamer outlasts TJ in showdown

AUBURN - On Friday night at the Thomas Jefferson gymnasium, it took five games of fury before one South Puget Sound League volleyball team rose from the turmoil in victory.

Rallying relentlessly from a 2-1 game deficit and a 6-3 disadvantage in the fifth game, the homestanding Raiders edged out crosstown rival Todd Beamer, 3-2, for a nonleague win.

Trailing 6-3 in the fifth game, the Titans marshaled their forces for the winning surge. Beamer gained one point on a net serve from TJ and continued its momentum behind the serve of Alex Schultz.

A decline in classroom decorum?

Recently I had the opportunity to attend my 50th year high school reunion.

About half of our class was in attendance, and there were still some who I could recognize without a name tag!

Also in attendance was my high school Latin teacher who began teaching in 1947 and quit in 1970 "when discipline became an issue!"

One has to wonder if she thought "discipline" was an issue in 1970 what she would think of today's students!

There were several other members of my class who had been in educational systems, mostly in the East, who also echoed my Latin tea

Live comedy's Sorbo benefits breast cancer

By Bruce Bulloch

Live comedy returned to the Admiral Theater this fall with "Ladies of Laughter."

Featuring Seattle's best standup comics, the series ran through the month of September and benefited the Susan G. Komen Breast Foundation. If you have an appetite for edgy, no-holds-barred humor there was no place else to be. Case in point is Cathy Sorbo who headlined the Sept. 12 and 13 shows.

A ray of sunshine

There may be a little ray of sunshine in the unmitigated financial disaster that has befallen the American people, a disaster brought on by greed and complete failure of our federal government to oversee the runaway train called Wall Street.

The roots of all of this stems from the U.S. airline deregulation act approved in 1978. From there, the term deregulation took on a life and an ethic of its own.

Beach walk/run for cancer

If you can run or walk and want to help women dealing with breast cancer, your opportunity comes on Sunday, Sept. 28 in the form of the fifth Annual Alki Beach Walk/Run.

All proceeds go to benefit the West Seattle based Northwest Hope and Healing Foundation, an organization dedicated to helping women battling breast cancer. The 5K route will begin at the Statue of Liberty at Alki Beach Park, and continues along the West Seattle waterfront to Anchor Park.

Each participant is encouraged to gather pledges of $100 or more. Unlike many cancer research organizations all money raised will be used to directly assist breast cancer patients in need of non-medical support services, such as childcare, transportation and other emergency needs. In the last five years, over 900 participants and volunteers have raised over $170,000 at this annual event.

"This organization does amazing work helping breast cancer patients in the Seattle area, and I am privileged to be part of it," says Shari Sewell, the director of Northwest Hope and Healing.

Northwest Hope and Healing Foundation is a non-profit organization founded by Christine Smith in 2000.

Spanking is wrong

I wish, for the love of mercy, that someone in the local press or blog community would bring some attention to the fact that Mars Hill Church is bringing Ted Tripp to Seattle in just a few weeks. Tripp has an extreme focus on corporal punishment, and teaches parents to target BABIES as young as 8 months old for physical discipline. It makes me sick that this guy is going to come to Seattle and influence young parents here. Tripp's ideas are developmentally inappropriate and sexually unsavory for small children. Check out some of the reviews for his book on the Amazon website.
