Budget crunch could mean school closures

Some Seattle schools may have to be closed by next June because of a $24 million deficit the district is facing.

The first phase of a school board resolution will address capacity shortages in North Seattle, Queen Anne and Magnolia, but the deficit must by law be closed.

Scary Halloween

On 26th SW, a recipe for a Halloween tragedy: an uninvited guest returns to a party armed with a loaded SKS rifle and goes from room to room, searching for a fellow he had argued with earlier in the evening. But one guest waits for an opportunity and manages to "jump" the suspect and wrestle the gun away with the help of others. The group then wraps the man's arms and legs with duct tape and keeps him on the floor until officers arrive. He was booked into King County Jail for investigation of harassment.

Chandler Dennison races to state

By John Leonard

"I'm so happy."

With the depth of those three words, West Seattle High's Chandler Dennison released the tension of an entire cross-country season. She had just qualified to compete in the state 3A high school championship meet.

The qualifying event was the SeaKing District meet last Thursday at Lower Woodland. Dennison was the only girl in the Metro League to advance to SeaKing without a team. She started in her own lane, alone, among 87 girls.

For this one all-important race Dennison had to suppress the gladiator within, and run instead with her head. This was a race for place, not for time. She simply had to finish in the top 20. This was doable.

Chatty Gabby the Calico Cat

Gabby the calico cat got her name because as a kitten she jumped on her owner Anna Wilde's shoulder and started talking. She's five years old now. Katie, her daughter, got the cat when she was 16 but Gabby (who incidentally is NOT a lap cat) loves Anna, "Maybe because I feed her or because I'm a cat person," Anna said. A while back a coyote nabbed a dog in the neighborhood but Gabby, who loves to be outside, seems to be doing just fine. She sleeps in the garage, though she used to sleep in the basement.
