HCC volunteer is recognized

The Council for Resource Development has selected Dan Altmayer as the 2008 Campus Impact Award recipient for his volunteer efforts as a Highline Community College Foundation board member. _

"This is quite an honor," said Altmayer. "It reflects on the strength of our board, the institution, and the belief of the community and their support of our college."__

Third runway officially open

On the kind of cloudy, rainy late afternoon the third runway was designed for, an Alaska Airline jet became on Jan. 20 the first commercial aircraft to take off from the new runway.

Highline College offers retraining for workers

Highline Community College can offer immediate help for workers displaced amid the current economic troubles.

The worker retraining program helps people who are unemployed or facing imminent layoffs learn new professional skills to get back in the work force.

"Workers who find out they are losing their jobs should check into retraining options as soon as possible," said John Huber, Highline's worker retraining manager.

Tibbs returns for fifth season with Gators

Decatur standout basketball player Marcus Tibbs, a two-year, first team all-league 6-foot-1 guard who was the Gators’ go-to guy at the Class 4A state tournament each of the past two seasons in helping his team take sixth place at state last February, obviously knows the game of basketball like the palm of his hands.

Federal Way graduate Aaron Broussard scored two points for the Seattle University men’s basketball in an 87-82 loss to Evergreen State.

Orr, Peterson at Concordia

Todd Beamer graduate Brittany Orr and Decatur graduate Jenna Peterson are now playing for the Concordia women’s soccer team. Orr is a 5-foot-7 freshman defender and Peterson is a 5-5 freshman defender.

Youth violence a problem

Since October 31, 2008 twelve people have died from youth violence. For decades suburbanites' have had a nonchalant attitude "This will not happen in my neighborhood." This attitude led adults to believe the deviant and criminal behavior the youth (disadvantaged youth or youth of color) will not negatively impact the 'upper echelon' of society. We have raised a generation of children with no awareness of self and who are unloving, uninvolved and uncaring. We call them misguided youth; then again, you can only be misguided if you received improper guidance.

Paid parking support

I am a resident of the Epi Apartments and I'm all for the paid parking. I remember they had a petition up in the lobby for residents to sign who were against, which I thought was inappropriate especially since they didn't have one for those of us that believe Fremont should have paid parking.

My point is that your perception is that all of Fremont or the majority is against paid parking. But the truth is those of us who think the paid option viable just don't voice our opinion as much or haven't been given the opportunity.

Save the Post Office

I'm writing concerning the possibility of the Ballard Post Office's losing its lease and moving to the Annex near Fred Meyer. I've been told by post office employees that the thing to do is to contact our Congressman, Jim McDermott.

Snowflakes won't return to streets

Last season was Ballard's illuminated holiday snowflakes last appearance on Ballard Avenue and Market Street.

The Ballard Chamber of Commerce has decided to not put them up this year due to the wear and tear on the decorations and little financial or volunteer assistance they've had in the past years.

However, in place of the snowflakes the chamber has decided to bring back the "pay-per-tree" program, where stores can sponsor the decorating of the trees in front of their stores with lights.
