Ferries on holiday schedule

The Washington State Department of Transportation Ferries Division reminds travelers to allow extra time for ferry travel over the busy Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

There is no passenger-only service between Seattle and Vashon Island on Thanksgiving Day. Four routes will be on a holiday schedule on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 27: Point Defiance/Tahlequah, Seattle/Bainbridge, Edmonds/Kingston and Mukilteo/Clinton.

Workshops on school closures and capacity coming up

The Seattle School District plans to close more schools due to budget deficits and declining enrollment. It will hold a series of public workshops as a step toward that goal.

The community is invited to two consultative workshops on Dec. 4 and 6 to discuss preliminary recommendations.

Police Blotter: Flipping off leads to flipping out

At 16th and SW Lander, a man apparently took offense at a glance made by a passing motorist. The suspect turned around and followed the victim into a parking lot where a verbal altercation began. The victim flipped off the suspect, who then allegedly said, "I'm going to shoot you," as he began rummaging underneath the seat of his car. The victim fled the scene.

"Dream Football" to be auctioned for charity

How much would you bid for a one of a kind football signed by a list of over 50 luminaries that includes Jerry Rice, Steve Largent, Dave Krieg, and even Paul Allen?

Jerry A. Hermanson has made it his mission over the past four years to get all these autographs on a special stainless steel football that was originally created by and given to him by his father.

It is set to be auctioned off on Ebay beginning December 3rd (but ending December 13th). "We hope to raise at least $25,000 through the auction but hope to see a much higher number, said Hermanson.

All proceeds of this auction will go to the Make-A-Wish(r) Foundation of Alaska, Montana, Northern Idaho & Washington.

The football's dimensions are: 14" tall, it measures 8" x 7" . It weighs 4 pounds.

Tucked away in the nooks and crannies of our communities are small treasures that might go unnoticed if we are not made aware of them.

I got a tip from my boss, the Big Gruff Editor about Elfie and Jim Hornby, who live a few blocks behind Metropolitan Market off of Dash Point Road.

The Big Gruff Editor's voice went soft when he told me about the pair, that Elfie was a lovely German lady who had immigrated to the Northwest and taught dance, learned how to paint and had authored three books, and that her husband was a skiing enthusiast, avid bike rider and fine wood worker.
