Expert witness comments

I read with interest your article about the lawsuit between two restaurants over their purported similar trade dress, or appearance.

The U. S. Supreme Court in Two Pesos v. Taco Cabana ruled that the look of a restaurant can be protected if it has inherent distinctiveness. As the expert witness for Taco Cabana, I would caution restaurant owners about offering interior designs that may be seen as basically similar to another food establishment.

Car Counselor: Help! My car resembles a swimming pool!

Opening your car door in the morning and seeing a pool of water is a horrible feeling, but we have entered the time of year where automotive repair shops, body shops and detail shops begin seeing cars that have accumulated a large amount of water on the inside.

There are many factors that can contribute to water leaking into a car. There are a variety of seals on the doors and windows that can dry out, become brittle and begin to allow water to leak in.

The only way to prevent that would be to replace all the seals, but that is not realistic or generally cost effective.

Plant of the Month - Vine Maple

The last of the leaves are falling from the vine maples. The vine maple is a cousin to the Big Leaf Maple. Walking around our West Seattle parks, it is amazing to see the size of some of the leaves that have fallen from those big trees. But I like the grace and delicacy of the vine maples, and often their colors are brighter and more varied and vibrant than those of Big Leaf Maples. In that, they remind me of Japanese maples.

Vine maples can be used as ornamental trees and have multiple values for creating habitat in your yard and in our parks.

Common Cents: "Checklist" for surviving a financial crisis

Provided by Jon Gerhardt

Over the past few weeks, the news has been almost incomprehensible. It's hard for many of us to make sense of the failure of major Wall Street firms and large banks and the $700 billion bailout of the financial sector. And it's hard for investors to be calm when stocks have fallen almost 30 percent from their all-time high a year ago.

What can you do to cope? Consider the following "checklist" or surviving a financial crisis:

1. Close your ears, but open your eyes.

A poll worker's insight

Nov. 4 of this year was the last time that polls will be used in a national election in Washington State. This also means that no more poll workers will be getting a pay check each election.

I worked at the VFW Hall on Market in Ballard as a poll worker this election. The last election, I was at the Ballard Community Center.
