Mount Rainier High School graduates Nikki Murray and Sarah Martinez are going to the NCAA soccer tournament with the University of Washington.

Murray is a 2006 graduate and Sarah Martinez is a 2008 graduate. They helped Mount Rainier to a fourth place finish when Martinez was a freshman and Murray was a junior.

U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Des Moines Flotilla No. 32 regularly offers Boating Safety and Seamanship courses in the Federal Way and Des Moines areas.

They cover the full range of boating safety subjects, including federal requirements, basic piloting, marlin spike, seamanship and boat handling.

The instruction is free, although there is a nominal fee for the student text and work books.

Council budget gives priority to direct services to the people

On Monday, Nov. 24, the City Council unanimously approved the Seattle budget for 2009-2010.

This action was the outcome of seven weeks of hard work and discussion and votes on more than 100 proposed budget changes and policy issues, punctuated by two very well attended public hearings and continued economic bad news. Despite these difficult circumstances, the Council adopted a budget that once again gives priority to direct services to the people of Seattle - food and shelter for those in need, public safety, transportation, libraries, and parks.

Waterfront to suffer, gain with viaduct replacement

Waterfront businesses could lose $65 million of value during construction of the replacement to the viaduct, but may gain up to $250 million in increased property values, according to a study presented to the Alaskan Way Viaduct Stakeholders Advisory Committee Thursday,

The study, by ECONorthwest, showed "no change in the economic activity in the region," said Ron Paananen, deputy director of the Urban Corridors Office at Washington State Department of Transportation, during a press conference Thursday afternoon.

County budget restores 19 sheriff positions, keep White Center storefront open

The King County Council has passed a 2009 budget that restores 19 sheriff's deputies, keeps the White Center storefront office open and retains critical public health programs.

Faced with an unprecedented $93.4 million general fund shortfall and proposed cuts to a host of programs, the council approved a total $4.9 billion budget with a general fund of $627.8 million.

"The Council was able to restore funding for the Sheriff's storefront offices, reinstate necessary court services, and rescue critical public health programs," said Council member Dow Constantine.

State Web site will help fight insurance fraud

Insurance Commissioner Mike Kreidler is using his office's Web site to help fight insurance fraud.

In an effort to protect consumers, the fraud section of the site has been expanded to educate people on how to recognize and avoid fraud, and to make reporting easier. It also features facts about fraud and examples of real cases.

"Insurance fraud is a widespread problem and many people never think about it or consider how it affects them," said Kreidler. "For example, people might think that padding an insurance claim is a victimless crime, but they're wrong.
