Corporate sponsor for Des Moines birthday

Puget Sound Energy (PSE) has announced a $5,000 gift to Des Moines to help fund the city's 50th birthday events next year, becoming the first corporate sponsor of this year-long celebration.

Des Moines, with origins as a logging and fishing community more than a century ago, incorporated as a city on June 17, 1959.

Mayor Bob Sheckler thanked PSE for its grant, expressing "gratitude to Puget Sound Energy not only as a long-time business anchor in Washington but also as a good neighbor in the communities it serves.

Juried art show, gems set at Burien gallery

On Dec. 11, the Burien Arts Association will hold the opening reception for the Artists United Annual Juried Art Show from 7-9 pm at the Burien Art Gallery.

In addition to the juried show, this month's offerings at the gallery includes "Rare Gems," a collection of exquisite art at affordable prices, just in time for the holidays, gallery officials said.

Pam Ingalls, a Vashon Island artist, will act as the juror for the Artists United juried show at the gallery.

North Highline school picked for global health program

The Highline School District's Health Sciences and Human Services High School (HS3) is the first of four Washington schools to be chosen for new global health program developed by the Washington Global Health Alliance (WGHA).

The small learning community is located on the Evergreen campus in White Center.

The WGHA Ambassador program is a pilot project designed to introduce global health issues to high school students.

Highline College helps low-income students

Highline Community College's Workforce Development Services is offering a new program that helps students in financial need go to college.

The Basic Food Employment & Training (BFET) program helps needy students with a variety of college-related expenses, including tuition and fees. The program does not train workers for the food industry.

"For many students, just getting their college career started can be an incredible challenge," said Erik Tingelstad, director of Highline's Workforce Development Services.

Williams at safety for UW

If your football team has a problem letting wide receivers slip past your defense, then he’s the man to call.

Nate Williams has been occupying the free safety position for the University of Washington Huskies as a sophomore and he has already drawn attention as a possible defensive secondary player in the National Football League.

“Obviously I’d like to make the NFL on day, but I’ll focus on the rest of this year and two more,” Williams said.

Kennedy captures eighth in Kennewick

Kennedy fininshed off it’s 2008 volleyball season by being trophy girls, once again, finishing high. The Lancers took the eighth place hardware home after action at the Toyota Center in Kennewich for the WIAA Dairy Farmers of Washington state championships Nov. 21-22.

“We’ve done well here,” said Tom Muckerheide, the Lancers’ coach. “Second place two years ago and seventh place last year and eighth this year.”

The top eight places get trophies and there are something like 80 3A high schools in the state of Washington.
