Food Bank drive underway

Teaming up with the Ballard Food Bank and Ballard Brothers Seafood and Burgers restaurant, the Don Jones Foundation is lending their helping hands at its Fourth Annual Coat and Toy Drive.

First started in 2005, after the late Don Jones who lost his battle with cancer, it was his family's mission to continue his tradition of adopting families in need during the holiday season.

"We started in San Francisco and our goal was to serve a couple of families and we've grown since then serving families outside of the area," said Mollie Overa, daughter of Don Jones.

Legislature faces cuts

A post-election election retrospective had a bit of the usual celebration of victory, but much concern was expressed over the economic downturn that likely will require the Washington Legislature to slash millions out of the next state budget.

State Sen. Jeanne Kohl-Welles' 15th annual post-election analysis last week where glee was first expressed.

"I want to keep reliving election night, like Groundhog Day," said Kohl-Welles, 36th District Democrat.

Correction

Due to an editing error in a caption of a photo on Page 11 of the Nov. 26 Ballard News-Tribune, the cost of the work on new footings for portions of the Alaskan Viaduct was misstated. About $5 million was spent. We regret the error.

Winter sports season coming

The Ballard High School winter sports season is just around the corner, bringing with it five teams and dozens of student athletes hoping to succeed in a tough KingCo league.

Boys Swimming

The boys swim team lost almost half its athletes to graduation last year, but head coach Thor Tyson said coach Leo Jaeger spearheaded a recruiting effort that brought 20 new swimmers to the team.
