New co-op brings fresh produce to Delridge

Neighborhood potluck March 28

When Galena White initially decided to start volunteering in her community, she wasn't sure exactly how she might do that. But after learning about the King County Food and Fitness Initiative she became inspired to help her neighbors make healthy choices.

White herself had recently lost 40 pounds by altering her diet to include more fresh produce and was amazed at how much healthier she felt. But in talking with members of her community she discovered that many residents in Delridge were both concerned and disappointed by the lack of healthy food available in their neighborhood.

To address this problem White is leading a community effort to start a new Delridge Produce Co-operative. With a group of board members, she will be applying for a city Neighborhood Matching Fund grant of $15,000.

“Nobody’s actually working on getting a healthy food store in Delridge,” said White. “With the help of this fund it is feasible to get started this year, and I can commit myself to getting it done.”

Personal bests in first track meet of the season

Going into the beginning of the 2009 track season, Ballard High School senior Michael Tran was expected by the coaching staff to be one of its team leaders. After all, he toiled as a junior varsity runner on the cross country team while building up his endurance base.

The work he put in during the fall and winter paid off for him March 19 at the North Seattle Jamboree, as he won both the long jump and 400 meter dash in personal bests.

Tran started off his day in the long jump, where all four of his jumps were superior to his 2008 personal best.

Tran scored his personal best in the 400 meters, winning the race in commanding fashion with a time of 54.6 seconds.

On the men's side, Ballard picked up victories from senior Carlos Stanley in the 100 (11.8 seconds) and senior Jack Sandstrom in the 200 (24.1 seconds).

Junior Erin Philbeck had the best performance on the women's side, winning the 1,600 meter run in a personal best of 5:36.3. Philbeck scored another personal best in the 800, running 2:39.0 to finish fifth.

Junior Tina Kellogg scored Ballard's other victory Thursday, winning the discus with a personal best throw.

Delridge District Council considering neighborhood transportation projects

Vote scheduled by end of the month

After discussing several proposed neighborhood projects at the council's latest meeting on March 18, members decided to investigate the proposed changes further before submitting their list of top priorities to the Seattle Department of Transportation and Seattle Parks and Recreation for analysis and feedback.

Teresa Christianson, who lives in Westwood, attended the meeting to explain her neighborhood's strong desire for a traffic circle at the intersection of Southwest Henderson Street and 31st Avenue Southwest. Christianson explained that Henderson has become a major pedestrian corridor for families since construction was completed on Westwood Village and the Southwest Library.

Speeding cars on the street have caused two major accidents since Christianson started her proposal and prior to that a vehicle crashed into the home on the northeast corner of the intersection.

21st Century Viking: Sunset Bowl, one year later

Next month marks the first anniversary of the closing of Sunset Bowl, 1400 N.W. Market St. Since then, it has gone from a once-vibrant center of life in Ballard to a withered-up husk of a building as it waits to be demolished and redeveloped.

As we wait for this redevelopment, I think it is a good time to think about what was lost when it was closed and wonder what the future will hold for bowling in Ballard.

Sunset Bowl was one of my all-time favorite bowling alleys. The lanes were in tip-top shape and it was comforting to know that if you had the urge to go bowling at 3:30 a.m. on a Wednesday morning, you could go to Sunset. It also had a sense of community that I haven’t seen at many other bowling alleys.

If you came in during the afternoon, there would be seniors playing cards in the restaurant, kids having birthday parties, teenagers hanging out after school, and profs getting strike after strike. If you came on a Saturday night, the place would be filled with people bowling over beers and doing karaoke. I never went down there on a league night because it always looked so crowded, but I imagine it was a lot of fun for those who are into bowling competitively.

Kiwanis to raise food for White Center Food Bank

Members of the Division 26 Kiwanis in Seattle invite the public to bring non-perishable foods to the White Center Food Bank on April 8 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Members of the Kiwanis will be stationed outside the food bank at the food bank,10829 8th Ave. S.W., under a canopy to collect donations.

The White Center Food Bank says the most needed foods are Hamburger Helper and Rice-a-Roni type products as well as canned meat (not tuna), canned fruit, cereal and jelly.

The White Center Food Bank serves a diverse ethnic population so ethnic foods are always welcome. The food bank also accepts $5 and $10 gift cards from Safeway, QFC or Albertsons.

Cash donations can be sent to the White Center Food Bank at 10829 8th Avenue SW, Seattle, WA 98146.

The White Center Food Bank has been providing emergency food relief in this community for more than 30 years. In the past two years food insecurity has grown. The rising cost of housing, food, and health care, cutbacks in federal funding for housing and food assistance, and the loss of manufacturing jobs leave many working families short of food.

Ballard could get new public park on the water

Downtown Ballard will likely be getting a brand-new park with direct access to the Lake Washington Ship Canal.

Legislation is working its way through the review process that would allow the Seattle Parks Department to acquire the land at the south end of 24th Avenue Northwest from the Seattle Department of Transportation.

Dewey Potter, spokesperson for the Parks Department, said the legislation should transfer jurisdiction of the land by late spring, at which point the department will begin working with the community on ideas for the look and use of the space.

The park site is located between the vacant Yankee Diner, slated to become the Point Hotel at Salmon Bay, and the Pacific Fishermen Shipyard. It currently contains a dock, a bench and minimal landscaping.

The Seattle City Council passed a resolution in 1996 that created guidelines for street ends stating that the best use of these sites is for public use.

According to the resolution, the use of these sites as public spaces cannot conflict with existing marine-related commercial and industrial activities.
