Call for local artists

Organizers said that since last year's Fauntleroy Art Show proved so popular the Fauntleroy Church host it again Nov. 20 through the 22.

West Seattle artists working in any medium are welcome to apply by Sept. 30.

"We're looking for a variety of artistic expressions that will make it an interesting show," said coordinator Peg Jones.  "It will also be a sales opportunity for our local artists, so we encourage work in a wide price range."

Details and an application form are available at here or by calling the church office at 932-5600.

KFC robbery suspect at large

On Sunday, Aug. 23 at 9:08 p.m., a black male in his 20's, wearing a black bandana, entered KFC restaurant in the 1100 block of Northwest Market Street.

According to police, he walked toward the counter and displayed a handgun and said, “give me all the money.”

The suspect jumped over the counter forcing the cashier to give him the keys to the register. He took all the cash in the register and fled the store on foot.

A K-9 track was unsuccessful.

A Healthy Balance: Insomnia

Most people experience insomnia at some point in their life. Whether it manifests as difficulty falling asleep (primary insomnia) or waking in the middle of the night (secondary insomnia), it affects our daily performance, energy levels and interactions with others in our lives.

Sleeping aids with potential for addiction and very unpleasant side effects are used nightly in households all across America, but there are many simpler ways to get the sleep that you need to stay healthy physically and mentally.

First, take a look at your sleeping area and your habits. Do you frequently watch TV, work on your laptop or on stacks of papers, or read in bed before falling asleep. This can over-stimulate your brain and prevent you from falling asleep easily.

Removing these activities from the bedroom and finding another area of the house in which to do them can help calm your brain before sleep, allowing you to fall asleep more readily.

Sanctuary at Admiral 'unique gathering place'

One of West Seattle's newest historical landmark will soon be hosting events like a Halloween Silent Horror Movie Night, Sunday concerts with coffee and pastries and prix frixe dinners with local chefs.

Sanctuary at Admiral - a former Sixth Church of Christ, Scientist church - won historical landmark status from the city in a vote on Aug. 5, making it possible for the venue to obtain a conditional use permit for hosting events as an economic incentive to upkeep the property.

"We've finished the application process and are now waiting for the city to go over everything and give the go ahead," said proprietress Dahli Bennett.

In 2003 Bennett bought the 80-year-old church to live in with her three daughters. But using it as a residence there reverted the zoning to residential status.

After hosting a friend's wedding there in 2006, other events followed and the Sanctuary at Admiral as a venue was born. But under the residential status Bennett had to obtain special permits to host events on a case-by-case basis.

Two reasons for health care reform

Dear Editor,

There are so many arguments about health care reform that the opportunities are in danger of being lost. But our country has a great opportunity to fix at least two serious problems.

The first is we need to make sure that every woman can get maternity coverage.  For example, if pregnancy is defined as pre-existing, then a woman might not be able to afford needed maternity care.

A second reason to improve the current system is to make sure that children who are born with a birth defect or serious condition, including disabilities caused by being born preterm, can get the quality, affordable and comprehensive medical care they need to survive and thrive.

This is not about special interests; it's about our families.  As a March of Dimes volunteer, the health of women, newborns, and children matters to me.

I hope that our leaders in Washington remember this and don't lose sight of what this generation should be doing to ensure healthy future generations.

Time to start saving money

Dear Editor,

Well, it’s time to start saving money. First, there’s the trees you ordered for the parking strip that Mayor Greg Nickels thought we should have. Should be watered by property owners.

The city could reduce the water bill a little for that. Instead, we have two men and a big water tank to do this. What is it costing the taxpayers for this? Two men’s pay, gas, wear and tear on the trucks …?

I like the new idea about the parks closing some and the town that have chosen to be cities of their own should care for the parks. That will cut all these taxes that Seattle taxpayers have to shoulder. It will bring their town people closer if they keep up their own parks.

Give some of the parks back to the wild and the poor animals will get back to the woods. Where would you go to eat if someone took all your berries, trees, bushes, living places? You would go to find food and a new place.

So, please don’t blame our wild life. They were here before any of our houses!

Police Blotter Week of 8.24.09: Mixing it up

Monday around 2 p.m., a citizen stepped in—or should that be “pulled in”—to assist Fred Meyer employees who were chasing after two shoplifters. As the crooks ran out the door, electric mixers in hand, the helpful driver pulled in behind their getaway vehicle, blocking them from backing out. One thief yelled, “go over the curb!” and the getaway driver managed to sideswipe another car as they peeled out toward the Ballard Bridge. On the bright side, they left the loot behind.

Spatter on the ground and a bloody thermos were left near 9th Northwest and 48th on Tuesday morning, after two men attacked a third, leaving him with a broken nose and swollen cheek. After a witness saw the two suspects kick and stomp on the victim's head, he decided to intervene, fending the suspects off with a baseball bat until officers could arrive. The two assailants—one a Ballard resident, the other from south Seattle—were booked into King County Jail for investigation of assault.
