Hiawatha Turf Playfield is open

Renovation nearly complete

The Hiawatha Playfield renovation, begun in the summer is nearly complete. The turf field is open, and rubber track surfacing will be installed in the summer 2010. The project, budgeted at $3.6 million was funded in part by Seattle Parks and Recreation who contributed $2.5 million, Seattle Public Schools, with $1 million and the King County Council, led on the initiative by Dow Constantine with $100,000.

The contractor removed the fences on December 16, 2009, and clean up work is underway around the site. The playfield is located adjacent to West Seattle High School at 2700 California Ave SW.

There is still work to do installing soccer goals completing the backstop fencing and getting site fixtures installed. The contractor will be on site through the end of the year.

The Hiawatha Playfield was renovated with synthetic turf and updated lighting. Baseball, soccer, and football are represented with full-sized facilities. Three lanes of a non-conforming rubberized track encompass the sports field. Each lane is 3.5 feet in width. The existing field events located on the east side of the Community Center are being renovated as well.

Three city schools spin and tumble in the Gator Dome

When a trio of Federal Way School District high school gymnastics teams gathered together for leaps and spins on Wednesday at the Gator Dome, it turned into tight competition for all.

Despite three all around performers resting due to an assortment of aches and pains, Todd Beamer edged out Federal Way 145.55-145.20 while Decatur was just behind this pair at 144.7.

Beamer had tallied 166 points the previous week with all performers healthy.

"It's early in the season," said Titan head coach Gina Foster. "We're just trying to stay healthy. Some of our performers just needed to rest this week. We can do better, but it was good."

Victorious Todd Beamer was paced by the one-two combination of Samantha West and Cassie Peterson. West winged her way to first place on the uneven parallel bars with a score of 8.65 while adding an 8.6 second place on the floor exercise. Coupled with an 8.5 third place on the vault and a 7.9 sixth place on the balance beam, the Titan's achievements led to a first place all around total of 33.65.

Peterson pushed herself to a 33.6 second place total on the strength of first place on the floor (9.2) and No. 1 score of 8.9 on the vault.
