Architects and Garden Designers Needed for Community Gardens

Seattle Department of Neighborhoods Seeks Landscape Architects to Design P-Patch Community Garden

The Seattle Department of Neighborhoods P-Patch Community Gardening Program is building a Roster of Landscape Architects/Garden Designers to provide garden design services for new and expanded P-Patch Community Gardens. The 2008 Parks and Green Spaces Levy has provided funding for additional garden sites to be located in Ballard, Queen Anne, Rainier Valley, and West Seattle neighborhoods; sites are to be completed by Fall of 2012.

Designers are expected to plan, facilitate, and document a community input process by visiting community meetings, planning workshops, working with bi-lingual and youth focused outreach, and preparing concepts for the city to review. From there, they will present designs to the community, draft construction plans, and propose a project schedule and budget to impliment the plans. Garden designs and plans will emphasize simplicity and high quality infrastructure and materials that are easy for community volunteers to maintain into the future.

Washington Federal Savings up for design review April 12

The proposed two-story, 9,000-square-foot development to replace the current Washington Federal Savings building at 2020 N.W. Market St. will go before the Northwest Design Review Board April 12.

At the meeting, community members will be able to offer comments regarding the proposed design.

At an Oct. 12 early design guidance meeting for the project, the review board said it wanted to see a simpler design than the one proposed.

The board said it wanted the design to fit in on Market Street and show proper deference to the neighboring Carnegie's building.

The board named the Majestic Bay Theater and La Tienda as examples of the kind of design it would like to see.

The plan, as presented at the Oct. 12 meeting, is for the development to be 40 feet tall instead of the maximum 65 feet and to include parking and drive-up tellers in the lot behind the building on Northwest 56th Street.

The design review meeting will take place at 6:30 p.m. on April 12 at Ballard High School, located at 1418 N.W. 65th St.

Spokane Street Viaduct Update

First Avenue on-ramp to be closed starting May 17

The next major milestone in the South Spokane Street Viaduct Project (the structure that links the West Seattle Bridge to I-5) is the permanent closure of the First Avenue South on-ramp to the westbound lanes of the viaduct, tentatively scheduled for May 17. The ramp closure is required to widen the Spokane Street Viaduct to the north by approximately 41 feet. The new westbound on- and off-ramp will be constructed on First Avenue.

In the year and a half during which there will be no access to the Spokane Street Viaduct from surface streets in SODO, vehicles will be detoured to the low level swing bridge to get to West Seattle. Alternative routes are noted in the attached detour map. SDOT will be monitoring traffic flows along the detour routes following the closure to determine whether changes in signal timing or other measures are needed to keep traffic moving.
