FW Boys finish third at state

Federal Way rebounded from a disappointing 53-45 upset loss to Jackson of Everett in the state Class 4A boys basketball semifinal to capture third place with a 53-44 win over Wilson.

The Eagles missed out on the second-straight state title they were gunning for, but they made the most out of their situation with the consolation win over the Rams from Tacoma.

"In retrospective of it all, it's been a great run," said Federal Way head coach Jerome Collins, whose team finished with a 26-3 overall record including an out-of-state loss to Jefferson of Portland, Ore. "I'm just proud of our kids and our program. It's just a lot of tradition. We thought about the legacy we wanted to leave."

Leading the way for much of the season was 6-foot, 7-inch senior center Cole Dickerson, who is the younger half brother of former University of Arizona and NBA player Michael Dickerson.

"I wanted to finish strong and leave a tradition for the young kids," said Cole after he scored 16 points and hauled down 13 rebounds against Wilson. "I didn't want to lose my senior game.'

Dickerson has already signed up to take his talents to the University of San Francisco.

Season-opening loss for Ballard lacrosse

The Ballard High School lacrosse team got more than they could handle from Issaquah in a season-opening, 17-5 loss March 16.

Issaquah was able to get out in front early, winning face-offs and scoring three quick goals to open the match, and Ballard never threatened, trailing 12-2 at the half.

Coach Lise Martin said the score was about what she expected for a first match from a Ballard team that includes a number of freshmen and some players that have never played lacrosse before against a very skilled Issaquah team.

Martin said the team was able to increase its intensity as the game wore on and should only see improvement as the players get more experience.

Junior captain Maddie Soukup led the Beavers with three goals, including an impressive leaping score against multiple Issaquah defenders to get Ballard on the board.

Junior captain Jayne Barnes and freshman Sophie Mora finished with a goal apiece.

Sophomore goalie Hannah Breton finished with eight saves.

Ballard will look to rebound against Kennedy at 5:15 p.m. on March 17 at Kennedy High School.

Pet of the week: Raleigh is a ratter

Raleigh is a Parson Russell Terrier. Rick Moerloos his owner explained, "He's similar to a Jack Russell Terrier but a little bit taller and he's got that kind of wiry hair, and he's actually much nicer than Jack Russell's."

Raleigh is 6 1/2 years old and very active, typical for the breed, "But he's pretty mellow at home," said Moerloos, "He's a little snuggler. He loves to sit in our laps when we watch TV."

Raleigh has had two knee surgeries but it hasn't slowed him down a bit. "He was chasing a squirrel and he tore his ligament in one of his rear legs," said Moerloos, "and he's got a daschund brother at home and a Welsh Terrier."

This must keep him active enough because he was out roller blading on Harbor Avenue sometimes towing Moerloos, sometimes just keeping pace.

Ballard softball off to great start

After a one-win 2009 season, the Ballard High School softball team has opened the 2010 season with two straight dominating performances in nonconference play.

The Beavers blew out Ingraham March 15 to open the season and followed it with a 12-1 dismantling of Lakeside.

Coach Kyle Gray said the team is really buying into changing last year's losing culture into a winning culture this season.

Ballard is getting excellent leadership out of captains Bernie Cardon, Karissa Marshall and Sophie Overlock-Pauley, Gray said. And, the freshmen players have made a big impact, he said.

Against Lakeside, freshman Andrea Jewett pitched a full five innings, striking out nine batters while giving up three hits and three walks.

Marshall went one-for-one with three runs scored and an RBI.

Kimmerly Amry went one-for-two with three runs scored and an RBI on a triple.

Ballard scored 12 runs on six hits and showed solid defense with only one error.

The Beavers have two more nonconference games, starting with Sammamish at 3:30 p.m. on March 24 at Lower Woodland, before KingCo play begins April 5 against Roosevelt.
