Des Moines Methodists trying something different on Sunday mornings

The Des Moines United Methodist Church has begun offering a new style of worship at 11:30 a.m. Sunday mornings.

The pNEWma Worship Service (pneuma is the Greek word for spirit) features a worship band, diverse musical styles, interactive events, and contemplative rituals.

This new service provides an opportunity for people who want something different from a traditional approach to worship.

The goal is to welcome a broader range of community members into the church.

"Our church is very committed to reaching out and helping people find the peace, belonging, and empowerment that come with following Jesus Christ," says Pastor Rev. Karla Fredericksen. "We are providing new and creative programs for young adults and families as well as strengthening our current programs for children, youth and adults."

A worship leader and family ministries coordinator was recently hired to design the new service and develop programs to help meet the spiritual and social needs of young adults and young families.

Haiti earthquake touches students at Foster High in Tukwila

Two students of Foster High School in Tukwila, Yvener Cadeus, 17 and his sister Esther Cadeus, 19, came to Tukwila in 2008 from their home in Haiti.

"We lived in Petion-Ville," Yvener said.

He said this is where the 7.0 magnitude earthquake was located.

Yvener and Esther lost their cousin in the quake. The house they had lived in just a year and a half ago collapsed and killed her.

"We could have been in that house," said Yvener.

Neither Esther nor Yvener spoke English upon moving to the United States.

"We spoke Haitian Creole and French," Yvener said.

Upon hearing about the quake in their country, both students said their hearts sank.

"I was so scared," said Esther.

"We thought about our family," Yvener said. "It happened in our city."

Their family has been trying to get their aunt sent here, but their request has been denied by the government.

Both agree, however, that they have received a lot of support from their Foster High School classmates and teachers.

"It makes me feel better because they care about us," said Yvener. "They ask us how we are and if we're doing okay."

Visitor from Chicago, Illinois wins the West Seattle Fishing Derby at Hole Fools Lake

The Herald received this humorous submission to our Tips@westseattleherald.com email address today. While the name is, shall we say "fishy" we thought it was amusing enough to share with you. It's regarding the "West Seattle Fishing Derby" that they say was held this past weekend.

"Tocs Dlod was able to land a record Land Shark for the Lake. “People had been catching them all day with hundreds but all I had was a $20” he said. The long time fisherman, and used to the perils of fishing for land sharks around Chicago, met his match with against the other West Seattleites in the Derby. Ed, his Brother in law, part of Lesser West Seattle Chamber of Commerce, said “we originally were going to fish the Lynnwood Derby, but once the rain moved in, West Seattle was the logical choice to entertain the visitor”. The Locals took it pretty hard, and asked that he not return, “Okay” was his response, as he left with the Trophy."

Police Blotter week of 3-15-10

Arbor Highs..oops...Heights

A citizen called 911 after finding what turned out to be over four pounds of marijuana spread over half a block of an Arbor Heights roadway. Officers photographed the scene and gathered the buds and leaves for destruction.

At a local community center, an 18-year-old young man, appalled that his younger sibling had struck a girl at school, decided to teach his brother a lesson by slapping him and pulling him off a chair. The 11-year-old told officers that he was surprised by the discipline but not injured. The elder explained to the officer that they are of Samoan heritage, that “violence is a way of life,” and that he was just trying to be a good older brother. Two aunts picked up the boys and assured officers that there would be no more fighting between the two.

After his father passed away, a man was going through his things and found a sawed-off shotgun under the bed. He brought it to the precinct for destruction.
