Ballard survives Issaquah for 3-2 win

Freshman Brittney Blokker drove in the winning run in the top of the seventh, and senior pitcher Sophie Overlock-Pauley survived a bases-loaded scare in the bottom the seventh, as the Ballard High School softball team escaped Issaquah with a 3-2 win April 21.

Issaquah jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning and held it until Ballard was able to even the score in the fourth.

Blokker's RBI single in the top of the seventh gave Ballard the lead for good, but the Beavers were not safe yet.

Issaquah had loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but Overlock-Pauley, who threw five strikeouts and gave up five hits in seven innings, was able to force two groundouts to end the game.

The Beavers have won two of their last three games and three of their last five to bring their record to 3-4 in KingCo and 7-4 overall.

Ballard squares off against Eastlake at 4 p.m. on April 23 at Lower Woodland.

Special events spice up Burien Farmers Market

New at this year's Burien Farmers Market, special events like a dog fashion show and the Seattle Humane Society's MaxMobile will spice up the usual market fare.

Produced by the Discover Burien Association, the farmers market opens May 6 in Burien Town Square with farm-fresh fruits and vegetables, locally made food items and unique handcrafted goods.

On opening day, enter the family pooch dressed to thrill in a dog fashion show at 3 p.m. The fashion show is the senior project of a local high school student. On May 13, consider adopting a pet from the Seattle Human Society's MaxMobile from noon to 3 p.m.

For customers concerned with freshness or sustainability, the market's just-picked produce is grown by Washington State farmers, mostly local, plus a few from Eastern Washington. Quality is particularly high since there are no middlemen or delays. Great prices are another benefit of shopping the market, even for organically grown produce, according to Debra George, Discover Burien's events manager.

This year, a meat vendor will join the many returnees offering such food finds as local raw honey, handmade gluten-free pasta and fresh-baked goods.

Jeff Kearney to be honored for service to Burien

Burien resident Jeff Kearney will be honored by the city of Burien at Burien City Hall on Monday, May 3 at 7 p.m. for his endless hours of service to the city and his survival despite the odds.

A familiar face around Burien and White Center, he has volunteered untold hours at community events, ranging from the Father's Day Car Show to Winterfest. Kearney helped out at regularly performing a variety of tasks at Burien's Farmers Market and for the Discover Burien.

The special needs 37-year-old will be honored with an official city proclamation during the Burien City Council meeting May 3.

Decatur girls tennis conquers Curtis

It was a cool and overcast April 19th Tuesday that featured an experienced and stronger skill level Decatur 4-1 girls team tennis victory against visiting Curtis of University Place.

The Gator record is now 4-1 for second place behind unbeaten Thomas Jefferson in the South Puget Sound League 4A Central Division
Decatur decidedly dominated the first two completed matches.

Like a tidal wave, the Gator tandem of defending Class 4A state singles champion Meghan Cassens and Chanel Carlson steadily stroked forehand and backhand winners to engulf Heather Hopkins and Kelsey Lewis, 6-0, 6-0, to win at No. 1 doubles.

No. 1 singles followed a similar current as Decatur's Sarah Lin outgunned Rovetta Haynes, 6-0, 6-0, at the No. 1 singles.

Salena Shugarts had all she could handle before suduing the Vikings' Katie Kim, 6-3, 7-5, in No. 2 singles action for an insurmountable 3-0 Gator match lead. Third set play showed Kim forcing Shugarts to examine tactics.

"I didn't serve well," stated Shugarts. "I had to play more with strategy, instead."

UPDATE: Waste Management Teamsters Local 174 coming back

Workers returning to "prevent a public health crisis"

In a statement released Thursday afternoon, Waste Management said that garbage workers across King and Snohomish counties would return to work, Friday, April 23 at midnight.

"We are trying to persuade Waste Management to stop bargaining in bad faith," said Rick Hicks, Secretary-Treasurer of Teamsters Local 174,".

"However, we are also concerned that if we continued the strike, Waste Management might lockout our members and create another Oakland." He was referring to the 2007 strike that created havoc in that California city. The primary reason to return to work then was to "prevent a public health crisis."

Labor and management agreed to return to the bargaining table on Monday, according to Mike Gonzales, spokesman for Teamsters Local 174.

Local Waste Management garbage haulers went on strike on Tuesday April 20 when, Waste Management workers said, the company was no longer willing to discuss the terms of their contract with their union, the Teamsters local 174.

SLIDESHOW: Eagles pull out victory in heroic sixth

Things can change quickly.

Not only was that the case when rain struck the Federal Way High School baseball field after the final out was made Tuesday, but the Eagles suddenly changed a 6-2 deficit behind Thomas Jefferson to a 9-6 victory with a seven-run bottom of the sixth inning.

Austin Weber then finished off the Raiders by striking out the side in the top of the third.

Federal Way improved to 8-4 in South Puget Sound League North Division action with the unexpected win as TJ fell to 7-5.

"It's been awhile since we beat those guys," said Eagles head coach Danny Graham of the Raiders. "They're a great team."

On the other hand it was a frustrating loss for TJ.

"We just let it get away," said Jefferson assistant coach Greg Campbell.

It looked like the Raiders would be the team that would run away with the day in the top of the first inning.

Travis Quackenbush was hit by a pitch and Harold Adams launched a two-run home run.

Federal Way answered in kind with two runs in the bottom of the inning.
