Mercer Island ends Beavers' streak

The Ballard High School lacrosse team's two-game winning streak came to a halt April 9 in an 11-6 loss to Mercer Island.

Goalie Hannah Breton had 20 saves, but the Beavers simply allowed too many shots on goal.

Mercer Island got off 31 shots. Ballard averages 23.5 shots allowed per game.

Jayne Barnes did her best to keep her team in it, scoring a team-high four goals.

Kelsey Barta and Maddie Soukup added a goal each.

Ballard (2-3) takes on winless North Kitsap at 5:45 p.m. on April 12 at North Kitsap High School.

Glider shown off at Lafayette Elementary

On April 6th the playground at Lafayette Elementary School in Seattle looked suspiciously like an airport. There was a real airplane—a glider—parked out by the basketball hoops. But don’t worry; Sea-Tac isn’t trying to sneak in a fourth runway next to California Avenue. It was there as part of the curriculum for Greg Schroeder’s fourth-grade class.

The kids have been studying aviation—everything from hot air balloons to the space shuttle—and the glider gave them a chance to hop in the cockpit and get some hands-on experience working the controls.

Heinz Gehlhaar, Mark Nyberg, and Bruce Bulloch of Evergreen Soaring towed the glider down from its home at Arlington Municipal Airport and assembled it on the school grounds.

West Seattle to break ground on Junction Plaza Park Monday, April 12

Location is a “greened” former gas station in the heart of the Junction

The West Seattle Junction has it all: friendly retailers, delicious food, arts, culture and convenient services; everything except an open space park for gatherings, playdates and concerts. In a joint effort to remedy that, the West Seattle Junction Association and the Junction Neighborhood Organization are announcing the Breaking Ground Celebration on the future site of the Junction Plaza Park on April, 12, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. at the corner of SW Alaska Street and 42nd Avenue SW, on the site of a former filling station that has been re-mediated over 10-years, with the old tanks removed and the land completely “greened” to remain so in perpetuity. Park completion date is slated for late May 2010.

Junction Plaza Park, designed by landscape architect Karen Kiest, will feature a plaza, complete with brick and concrete seating; a lawn with decorative benches; and a central performance area. All planting will be Northwest natives, including Vine maple, Northwest Flowering dogwood, Oregon grape and Sword fern.

Ballard foundation speeds up its windmill slaying

Between the wide storefronts of Caffe Fiore and Zayda Buddy's Pizza and Bar on Leary Avenue is a barely noticeable staircase that is more often than not used as additional seating for the Caffe Fiore crowd.

At the top of that staircase is the Quixote Foundation, a small family foundation that hopes to make its impacts on a host of progressive causes more noticeable than its entryway.

With an April 9 announcement that it will be spending its remaining $15 million in assets by 2017, the Quixote Foundation is hoping to make that impact sooner rather than later.

The Quixote Foundation was founded in 1997 in Madison, Wisc., by Stuart Hanisch, who, as his son and current foundation president Erik Hanisch said, had more money that he needed and a family with a long history of philanthropic giving.

The foundation, which moved to Ballard in 2003, is primarily interested in the areas of environmental equity, reproductive rights, election integrity and media reform.

Issaquah gets away from Beavers early

It didn't take long for the Ballard High School baseball team's April 8 game against Issaquah to get away from it.

A series of errant pitches, off-target throws and missed catches from Ballard let Issaquah runners advance at will on the way to a 5-0 first-inning lead.

Issaquah (8-2) continued to build on their quick start and handed the Beavers a 13-1 loss, their worst of the season.

Ballard finished with three hits, scoring its lone run in the final inning, to Issaquah's 11.

The Beavers are 2-7 overall and 2-5 in KingCo.

Things don't get easier anytime soon for Ballard. The team faces Redmond (7-2), who beat Issaquah 11-0 April 2, at 6 p.m. on April 12 at Hartman Park.
