Beavers rally against Roosevelt for first win

Ballard falls short versus Bothell

Down 3-0 at the end of the third inning, it looked as if the Ballard High School baseball team was on the way to its fifth loss in a row March 30 against Roosevelt.

But, the Beavers were able to rally. They scored one run in the fourth inning and one run in the fifth to head into the seventh inning within one run of Roosevelt.

Junior Brendan Foor gave Ballard the lead and sent it on its way to its first victory of the season with a two-run homer in the seventh inning.

The Beavers held on to win 5-3, giving senior pitcher Charlie Beaudoin his first win of the season.

Coach John Lamm said his kids didn't give up against Roosevelt, and it felt great to get the win.

The Beavers tried to pull off another rally the next day but fell short, losing 17-8 to Bothell.

Ballard found itself down 8-1 after the second inning but was able to cut Bothell's lead to 10-7 with a six-run fourth inning.

The Beavers gave up five runs to Bothell in the top of the fifth to bring the rally to a screeching halt.

Lamm said the team stayed in it but made a lot of mistakes and couldn't get an out when they needed it in the fifth inning.

Parks Code of Conduct takes effect April 1

The new Seattle Parks and Recreation Code of Conduct goes into effect on April 1.

The Code of Conduct brings together in a single document all the behaviors not allowed on some or all park property and includes provisions from Washington state law, Seattle City ordinance, already-adopted administrative rules and some provisions.

Violation of these rules can result in exclusion from a park or a group of parks.

New prohibited behaviors include:

  • Possession of glass containers at athletic fields, beaches or children’s playgrounds.
  • Smoking, chewing or other tobacco use within 25 feet of other park patrons and/or at play areas, beaches, playgrounds and picnic areas.
  • Conduct that poses a risk of harm to any person or property.
  • Possession of explosives, acid or any other article or material capable of causing serious harm to others.

Prohibiting smoking in some parks is consistent with Seattle Parks and Recreation’s mission to provide healthy, safe places for people to congregate and sends a message to Seattle’s youth that the norm is for public places to be smoke-free, according to a Parks press release.

Removed 8th Ave. tress being replaced

The Seattle Department of Transportation landscape crews will plant 30 serviceberry trees April 1 in the planting strip of Eighth Avenue Northwest to replace the dying Arbutus trees that were removed last winter.

Crews will work from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. to install the trees between Northwest 65th Street and Northwest 70th Street.

Serviceberries are small trees, up to 20 feet tall. They have white blossoms in March or early April, and orange foliage in the fall.

The Arbutus trees were planted in 1996 by Seattle City Light and likely fell victim to the unusually cold winter of 2008/2009, city arborist Nolan Rundquist told the Ballard News-Tribune in May 2009.
