UPDATE: Burien Town Square on hold as original bank shut down

Frustration is the predominant emotion surrounding the Burien Town Square project. Paul Keller, a principal with the developer of the Burien Town Square project Urban Partners, said they cannot sell or lease any of the space until they renegotiate their loan with the investment group S.T. Residential.

In September the FDIC seized Corus Bank, who owned the loan for the town square project. Burien Economic Development Director Dick Loman said the market has dropped by nearly 30 percent.

Keller said Urban Partner’s is working to renegotiate the term and amount of the loan, in an attempt to remain marketable in this economy. He said right now nothing can move until the loan is renegotiated, which is moving forward slowly.

“There hasn’t been the progress I think that all of us would like to see from a timing perspective,” Keller said. “It is incredibly frustrating but it requires patience.”

Keller said he would categorize the project today as stalled. The Burien Town Square project is in no short-term danger of becoming bankrupt, Keller said.

7 straight runs sink Beavers

After the Ballard High School baseball team took a 1-0 lead in the third inning April 22, Lake Washington scored seven unanswered runs to end the Beavers' two-game win streak.

Ballard wasn't lacking offense – the team finished with eight hits, same as Lake Washington – but couldn't find ways to score runs.

Senior David Doerr went two-for-four, freshman Rory Graf-Brennen went one-for-three and junior Danny Thompson went two-for-three for Ballard.

The loss dropped the Beavers to 5-7 in KingCo and 5-9 overall. They are fourth in the KingCo Crown Division.

With four games left, Ballard will face its biggest hurdle to finishing with a .500 record when it takes on Inglemoor at 7 p.m. on April 26 at Inglemoor High School.

Inglemoor is in first place in KingCo and trounced Ballard 11-1 March 25. But since that time, the Beavers have been able to defeat two of the top 10 teams in the state and go 5-5.

UPDATED: Seattle City Councilmember Burgess on Mayor's veto of Aggressive Solicitation ordinance

Councilmember Tim Burgess issued the following statement today in response to the Mayor's veto of the Aggressive Solicitation ordinance (C.B. 116807):

"While I am disappointed by the Mayor's decision to veto this legislation, I respect the prerogative of his position. I look forward to working with him and my colleagues on the Council to continue to find solutions to the crime and street disorder taking place in our city, including implementation of the other four measures of my five-point plan.

"I thank those in the community who have thoughtfully contributed a wide range of perspectives to this debate. Street disorder will not go away on its own; we cannot be satisfied with the status quo."

At the end of February, Burgess announced a five-point plan to address street disorder. In addition to the aggressive solicitation ordinance, the other elements of the plan include: more police foot patrols, continued hiring of officers to increase police presence in our neighborhoods, enhanced efforts to connect those in need with appropriate social services and giving higher priority to housing and support services for the chronically homeless.

Jacobsens selling Market St. property

Land likely to be used for residential development

The 71,520-square-foot property on the north side of Market Street near 24th Avenue Northwest that once housed Jacobsen's Marine and novelty store Archie McPhee was put up for sale by owner Bob Jacobsen April 19.

In February 2009, Jacobsen's Marine moved to West Seattle after nearly 60 years in Ballard; Archie McPhee moved to Wallingford earlier that year.

Since April 2009, Jacobsen had been renting the property, which includes four buildings from 2412 N.W. Market St. to 2436 N.W. Market St., to Maritime's Inflatable Boats.

Jacobsen's father, Bob Jacobsen Sr., collected and assembled the property piece by piece over the years, but Jacobsen said it feels like the right time to sell the land.

Barry Hawley of Hawley Real Estate, which is handling the sale, said it is hard to say when the property will be sold. He said the hope is to sell it within a year.

The current sales price for the property is $10.7 million. Hawley said that is cheap for what the property would have been worth in the past.
