SLIDESHOW: Scenes from Art in the Garden 2010

The annual Ballard Art in the Garden Festival returned to the Ballard P-Patch from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Aug. 21.

Hundreds of Ballardites roamed amongst the beds of sunflowers, artichokes and tomatoes while listening to music and admiring pieces from 25 local artists.

A lot of people in the neighborhood don't know the Ballard P-Patch, located at Northwest 85th Street and 25th Avenue Northwest, is there, said Mark Cooper, who tends a plot in the garden.

Art in the Garden is a great way to get attention for the P-Patch, Cooper said.

In addition to music, art and, of course, the gardens, the festival featured a flower sale, children's painting, a bake sale, a puppet show, a barbecue, a silent auction and more.

Cooper said, though it's cliched, a community garden is not really about the garden, it's about the community.

"It's great to be among fellow gardeners," he said. "There's a real sense of community to it."

You Are What You Eat: The forgotten flower

I just picked the most beautiful bloom in my garden. It is huge, almost a foot across, and white as snow, with wonderful lavender under colors. And, the best part about it is I’m going to eat it for dinner!

What is this edible, forgotten flower in my garden? It’s cauliflower!

Cauliflower is one of the cruciferous vegetables, like broccoli and Brussels sprouts. Try these easy ways to get this cancer-preventing vegetable into your family’s meals. Chances are, once they try these, cauliflower won’t be forgotten any longer!

  • 1-2 tablespoons curry powder (try Penzeys or World Spice)

Heat oven to 450°F. Cut cauliflower into flowerets. Toss with oil and curry powder. Bake for about 15-20 minutes or until tender. Makes 4 servings.

Athletes as "Gladiators" shows skewed perception on education priorities

Recently while traveling through airports in America I was struck by the “Headline News” that seem to be a fixation for much of the news media, and presumably the nation, about a recent parochial school graduate who has excelled as an “Indoor Gladiator.” It seemed that he was about to pick a coliseum to “Play” in and the entire media was in a frenzy about where this might be! There has been no mention of the academic skills of this “Gladiator.”

I wondered if this might have been the case in Roman times when coliseum games were the “major leagues.” As I recall these games were taking place at a time when a certain other group, Barbarians, whose focus was on “Burning and Pillaging” were approaching major coliseums with the idea of applying their skills.

I think that this analogy has some merit. Here in Federal Way schools we were fortunate enough to have many kids who were invited to the join the major leagues, but I saw no notice of these invitations in the local paper! Many had to make some very difficult decisions that would have some very long term effects.

SLIDESHOW: Old Burien Feed Store Shows Plenty Of Charm

A feed store in suburbia is an oxymoron. Who needs a bale of hay? Who needs 100 lbs of grain? What are those little chirping sounds? Who goes there?

One minute inside Hayes Feed & Country Store in Old Burien reveals the answers. Many, many people it seems.

CLICK ON THE IMAGE ABOVE TO SEE MORE PHOTOS

"Business is great!," says Mark (no last name). Mark escorts us around the store. There are bins with baby chicks constantly chirping .

There is a sense that you are stepping back in time--longer than maybe even the 60-odd years the store has occupied this part of town, longer in the manner that relics from the early farming days of our own community seem to peek out from a lonely, lofty perch. Not needed on today's modern farm, special tools adorn the walls where, if removed, the dust shadow would show their position. Rolls of wire rest like summer sausage in a butcher shop, waiting to be consumed by a local farmer who wants to raise some livestock.

Help bring soles to Haiti......one sip at a time

Nashville-based Soles4Souls®, one of the fastest growing charities in North America, facilitates the donation of both new and used shoes. Collecting shoes from the warehouses of footwear companies and the closets of people like you, the charity has, to date, donated over 8 million pair of shoes to people in need - both in the US and around the world. Over 1.5 billion pair of shoes lay idle in American closets, over 300 million children around the world are without shoes. Soles4Souls® has a simple mission: To impact as many lives as possible with the gift of shoes.

Sippin’ 4 Soles is a fundraiser aimed at helping support the work of Soles4Souls® in Haiti. In August, Seattle native, Ruth Clark, will be traveling to Haiti with Soles4Souls®, delivering and distributing shoes to those in need. The tax-deductible donations raised
at Sippin’ 4 Soles will go directly toward this Haitian relief trip, providing shoes and other necessary relief to those affected by the massive earthquake this past January.

Please join us for wine tasting, hors d'oeuvres, live music with The Fabulous Po’ Boys...raising money to help bring soles to Haiti......one sip at a time.
