Realty Mom: Drama mamas

A miracle occurred and four of the Fabulosities (my single mom gal pals) were childfree on the same weekend.

“Let’s go away together,” I suggested.

Another miracle occurred where a location was chosen and ferry times were coordinated with minimal fuss (a total of three emails!).

The miracles continued as three of us congregated at Willow’s house, on time, piled into her car and despite the Seahawks tailgaters and otherwise annoying congestion, we still pulled into the ferry line with 10 minutes to spare. We looked out the window to see the smiling Isabella, who had just left her date in Belltown to meet us.

All four Fabulosities were in the same car, going away for the weekend. I should have known it was too good to be true.

I felt some tension rising on our ferry ride, but chose to ignore it. I assumed it was due to all of the attention we were paying to Isabella’s recent love interest, who we did not know, therefore still liked, compared to Willow’s boyfriend, who we did not trust, therefore did not like.

Small mercury spill at Rotary Club totem pole

Fire Department and haz mat crews responded to what was described as a "small amount" of mercury reported on the ground at the Rotary Club totem pole at 35th S.W. and S.W. Alaska Street around 2:15 pm Sep. 3.

The incident commander for SFD said the source was unknown and "There was no glass of the type you might find in a thermometer or other kind of device like that, that uses mercury."

Crews were cleaning up the material and expected it to be resolved fairly quickly.

Ballard football opens season with a win

One game into the 2010 season, the Ballard High School football team has all ready matched its win total from each of the past two seasons, beating Sammamish High School 15-7 Sept. 2.

The Beavers took the lead in the first quarter of the nonconference matchup when junior quarterback Jesse Scott hit junior tight end Blake Sechler for a 36-yard touchdown. John Verduin added the extra point.

Sammamish, a team that went 3-7 last year while playing in KingCo 3A, tied things up heading into halftime with a 35-yard touchdown from Andrew Engles to Taylor Ragan.

Prior to the game, coach John Bowers said he wanted to see Ballard play well late in games and finish strong.

The Beavers did that, putting eight points on the board in the fourth quarter, courtesy of Scott's 45-yard touchdown pass to Sechler. Scott added the two-point conversion on a run.

Before the start of the season, Bowers singled out Scott and team captain Sechler as two players that have been working hard and showing improvement every day.

After 72 years, the Buckaroo stops here

After 72 years in the same Fremont location, the Buckaroo Tavern, the neighborhood bar that is still defiantly cash-only and where the popcorn is free and the motorcycles outside are revving, is closing its doors, hoping to find a new home soon.

In July, the Buckaroo Tavern announced its landlords would not be renewing their lease in the building at 4201 Fremont Ave. N that was built in 1908 and became the bar’s home in 1938.

The Buckaroo’s owner, Donna Morey – only the third owner in the history of the bar – said she was disappointed and shocked by the news that the bar would have to close or move, especially because the Buckaroo was doing well, paying rent on time and remaining solvent.

“It’s the saddest day of my life to know that I have to be the person to lock this door for the last time,” said Morrey, who bought the bar with her husband Keith in 1984. Keith passed away in 2007.

Morey said the Buckaroo is a relaxed place where very soul who comes through the door can be themselves. Since purchasing the bar, Morey has hosted Thanksgiving and Christmas potlucks every year.

ACC’s Family Fun Day at Statue Plaza Sunday, Sept. 12

Dog parade, kids talent show, and a bluegrass concert all on tap

The Alki Community Council sponsored Alki Plaza Summer Concert & Family Fun Day arrives Sunday, September 12 from noon to 7:30 p.m.

“This is the first year a Plaza festival will be held under the auspices under the Alki Community Council, said ACC spokesperson Libby Carr. “There has been an event there the last three Septembers. On September 11 it was Mayor Nickels dedicating the new statue on the old pedestal. Last Sept. 19 West Seattle Astronaut Gregory C. Johnson was there for the time capsule dedication.

“We dissolved our prior organization, the Seattle Statue of Liberty Plaza Project as we promised we would when the mission was accomplished,” said Carr. “It was accomplished when the plaza was completed. We passed the torch to the Alki Community Council. We have a memorandum of agreement now between the ACC and Parks Department. We wanted a public celebration of the ACC as the sort of ‘go-to organization’ and thought maybe we could do this annually.
