SLIDESHOW: West Seattle Rotary Holiday Shopping spree helps children

The West Seattle Rotary Club Holiday Shopping Spree got welcome last minute financial boost of $2500, all from Rotarians to bring them to their financial goal for the 37th annual staging of the event. Andy Horner, Rotary Community Service Chair said, "We raised the $2500 in one day to get us up to the budget total, from 60 people on the Tuesday before the Saturday event," he said.

"This year we're getting volunteers from Interact Clubs which are High School students that do service above self, so they are Rotarians in training and we've got a Sorority and a Fraternity from the University of Washington. This is my first year as a Rotarian (…) This is my first event and I want to help the community and be with friends. It's a lot of fun," he said.

Kiwanis pancakes are flowing for charity and camaraderie

64th Annual West Seattle Community Pancake Breakfast until 11 a.m. today

A West Seattle tradition since May of 1929, the Kiwanis Club is holding their annual community breakfast this morning (Dec. 4th) with the help of Boy Scout troop 284 and Key Club members from local high schools.

The main goal of the event is to collect toys for Toys for Tots and “a chance to renew long-standing friendships and to make new ones,” according to the event press release.

“This is a big thing here, this is our big fundraiser,” said Kiwanis member Ken Norton, who has been with Kiwanis for 27 years and is the past Dean of Students at Seattle Lutheran High School. “The main focus of Kiwanis is kids.”

“When I began in this club we didn’t have the help of the scouts and since that time it has grown just tremendously,” Norton said. “They provide a tremendous amount of help.”

Pancakes, ham, orange juice and coffee are being served at a rapid rate, and the pancakes come from a “treasured” recipe of long-time Kiwanis member Sig Staaksted.

Husband and wife Randy and Marie Guzzardo were in attendance as parents of a scout from Troop 284, which is in its 95th year (the third oldest continuous scout troop in the U.S.), according to Marie.

The program pairs a child with an adult and with the help of student volunteers everyone gets breakfast at the Mezza cafe in Starbucks Center.

Then then job shifts to determining the children's sizes for the shoes, coats and clothing they are to be given. Once ready, the "shopping spree" begins and warm winter coats, pants, tops or shirts and shoes are picked out within their budget.

Green Lake resident wins $170,000 in WA Lottery

Bystanders at the 7-Eleven on Roosevelt had to tell a Green Lake resident to stop jumping up and down, and get home to hide her ticket after she realized she won $170,000 playing Hit 5, a draw game from Washington’s Lottery.

The lucky winner stopped by 7-Eleven to pick up a bottle of water and check to see if she had any winning tickets. When she saw her winning prize she couldn't believe it. First she thought she won $1,700 then $17,000. Finally she had to call the clerk over to find out the final amount.

“He said, ‘No, no, I've been waiting for you to come in, it's $170,000," she said. "I went home and hid my ticket in in my room. I kept checking throughout the night to make sure it was still there. When I woke up this morning, I was worried it was all a dream.”

The winner said winning the Lottery is a Christmas miracle. “Things are getting better for the industry, but this money will be very helpful."

The first thing she intends to buy is a doggy bed for her new puppy.

The winning ticket was bought at 9126 Rossevelt Way in Seattle which will receive a retail selling bonus of $1,700.
