Zoo teams with Seattle City Light to install solar panels on historic carousel

Next time you take a ride on the historic carousel at Woodland Park Zoo, it will be powered by the sun.

Later this month the Woodland Park Zoo, in partnership with Seattle City Light, will install solar panels on the roof of the carousel pavilion located on the zoo’s North Meadow.

The solar panels are expected to produce 9,000 kilowatt-hours annually, enough to offset the electricity required to power the carousel, which completes an average 100,000 rides per year.

According to City Light, 9,000 kilowatt-hours is also the annual amount of electricity needed to power the average Seattle home.

“Seattle may be known as ‘Rain City,’ but solar does work here,” City Light Superintendent Jorge Carrasco said. “We’re excited to support this solar carousel project, to demonstrate very publicly how solar energy options are viable for both home and business use in our community.”

The solar carousel project is made possible by a $70,000 grant from City Light’s green power program, which is funded by voluntary contributions from customers in support of renewable energy education.

Lunchbox Laboratory left Ballard location in a messy state

Resident complains of trash and crows, calls Health Department

The lunchbox laboratory closed on Sunday, Dec 19th, but their trash is still outside the now vacant building on 73rd Street and 15th Ave N.W.

The BNT received a call today from a frequent customer of Jenny Nails next door to the relocated restaurant.

“That place is the epitome of dirtiness,” Kathy Abendroth said. “There’s trash everywhere.”

Walking up to her nail appointment, Abendroth said there were oils on the ground and the trash was attracting crows.

“If you have crows by day, you have rats at night,” Abendroth said.

Abendroth said she has called the Health Department who agreed to send an inspector to the site.

Le Han, owner of Jenny Nails, said she called the landlord and was told the owners had a ten day period to clean up the mess.

Han said that was six days ago.

“I’ve been in Ballard a very long time,” said Abendroth. “And this is something Ballard residents won’t stand for.”

BNT was unable to contact the owners of Lunchbox Laboratory at the time of publication.

South Seattle Community College promises free first year to Sealth HS seniors

Chief Sealth International High School seniors learned during a surprise assembly this morning in the auditorium that a free year of college is in their future, if they choose South Seattle Community College. It's president, Gary Oertli announced that the college’s 13th Year Promise Scholarship has been expanded to Chief Sealth. The program is funded through the South Seattle Community College Foundation comprised of community and business leaders who give donations.

He characterized the program as groundbreaking, the first of its kind in Washington State, as it guarantees every graduating senior the opportunity to attend South tuition-free for one year, regardless of grade point, test scores or other factors. Chief Sealth becomes South’s second 13th Year Promise Scholarship high school, joining Cleveland High School, where the program was launched with the Class of 2008.

“This is a phenomenal opportunity for our graduating seniors,” said Chief Sealth Principal John Boyd. “With the cost of tuition increasing at levels above inflation, the opportunity to have their first year of college paid for is a tremendous gift for our students and their families.”

Kitchen Wishin'

By Stacey Riley
Many of us have kitchen dreams that go unrealized. I want to give you some tips that are relatively inexpensive, pain-free and worth the time and small financial investment. Because this plan assumes no designer assistance, I suggest keeping colors soft to keep your nerves at bay.

Cabinets: Generally it isn’t the architecture of the doors but the finish that dates the kitchen, so paint is a great option. Rent a sprayer and if you are color challenged, select an antique white to keep it simple. Find some new hinges and handles to finish the update—make sure the finish matches your other hardware. If you have glass inserts, they can also be easily replaced (www.bendheimcabinetglass.com).

Countertops: Formica is an unpopular choice in these days of granite. But, Formica is an inexpensive way to get solid surfacing when funds are limited. Pop the countertop with something like apple green, gray/blue or a rusty orange. Choose a rounded profile; not a squared one.

Detectives from the Traffic Collision Investigation Squad (TCIS) responded to the location to process the scene and begin their investigation.
