Thistle Street Stair Cleanup commences March 5

Volunteers to help with the cleanup needed

The Thistle Street stairs will get a much needed cleanup from 10am-Noon on Saturday, March 5 by a group of volunteers organized by Michele Rogalin.

"I am encouraging those people with tools (scraping tools, rakes, brooms, flat shovels, weeding tools, and other implements of moss destruction) to bring them. I am planning to bring yard waste bags, drinks, and a plan of action for the various parts of the stairs," said Rogalin.

"I am hoping to get a good group together so that the project doesn't take very long. I use the stairs a lot for training, and they are a mess. (I recently saw someone slip - super scary. Luckily he was not injured.) I think it will be a fun and satisfying accomplishment for the community to come together and take care of our stairs."

If you can make it, come to the Thistle Stairway (Meet at the bottom)
Thistle St & 46th Ave SW shortly before 10:00 a.m. on March 5.

There is a Facebook community group called The Thistle Street Stairs. People who are interested can "Like" it and RSVP to the invitation.

Rumors Fly this Spring with Twelfth Night Productions starting March 25

Press Release:

America’s premier comic playwright Neil Simon delights with a laugh out loud comedy of class and cover-ups in Twelfth Night Productions latest offering, Rumors. Four couples are invited to the townhouse of a deputy New York City mayor and his wife to attend a party celebrating their tenth wedding anniversary.

The party never gets started as the guests soon discover that the staff and hostess are missing and the host has shot himself in the earlobe. Comic complications arise when his lawyer’s cover-up of what may or may not have been a suicide attempt gets progressively more difficult to sustain as the other guests arrive and no one can remember who has been told what about whom.

In true farcical fashion, doors slam and hilarity abounds as the couples get increasingly crazed in an effort to conceal the evening’s events from the local media and police. The New York Times described Rumors as “a farce with nothing on its mind except making the audience laugh.”

SLIDESHOW: The Link Apartments adds some urban art

The Link Apartments, and Harbor Properties are busy adding murals to the stairwells of the new property in a cooperative effort with the Twilight Artists Collective. Full artist profiles are available on the The Link Apartments website.

The artists from Twilight working on this phase of the artwork are Erin Staffeld, Curtis Ashby and John Osgood.

Twilight was hired to curate the entire building and they put together a "mural team" for the stairwells. Staffeld said, "We've been working with The Link architects for the last year coming up with an overall feel and they really wanted us to focus on urban, reusable, neighborhood driven art and design. The three of us put our heads together, and along with the architects talked about some kind of iconic imagery for urban street art, but we also wanted it to be representative of outdoors. The higher ups at Harbor really wanted to plug the outdoors, getting outdoors, walking vs. driving, so we thought …birds, flowers, wind to bring the outdoors in and to encourage people to use the stairs instead of the elevator."

Ghost Light Theatricals celebrates its 25th production with "The Skriker"

Ghost Light Theatricals announced today that their 25th production will be The Skriker by Caryl Churchill.
The Striker, a tale of dark magic, manipulation and fear, will show throughout the month of March with a final showing on the 27th.

The play, directed by Artistic Director and Ghost Light co-founder Beth Raas-Bergquist, tells the story of The Skriker, a dark, shape-shifting fairy drawn to desperation. After attaching herself to two teenage girls, the Skriker wreaks havoc with their lives, haphazardly granting minor wishes. Using dark magic, she makes flowers rain from the sky and turn words into frogs, and ultimately drags both girls into a rotting underworld filled with a macabre ensemble of broken fairies. Helpless against her power, the girls become increasingly desperate to save themselves and each other.

In one of her most astonishing works, Caryl Churchill seamlessly weaves themes of environmentalism and feminism into a world bursting with creatures from British folklore that are known for drowning and eating children.

SLIDESHOW: Spinathon fundraiser exceeds goals in getting bike program to Sealth and Denny

West Seattle biking community shows strong support for cause

All 52 stationary bikes at Allstar Fitness in West Seattle were put into non-stop action on Thursday night, Feb. 17, as local bicycle enthusiasts crammed the spin room full and pushed their cardio limits for three hours to raise money to bring the Cascade Bicycle Club Major Taylor Project to Chief Sealth High School and Denny Middle School.

“I didn’t expect this many people,” said Yonas Kiflemariam, a 17-year-old student at Global Connections High School in Seatac who has become an avid and accomplished cyclist having gone through the program. “I’m just so happy, so excited they are helping Major Taylor.”

The goal was to raise $5,000 to bring the after-school program to West Seattle schools this spring and summer. Ed Ewing, program director of Major Taylor, said he estimated the total raised would end up between $6,000 and $10,000.

“In its truest essence, it (the Major Taylor Project) is a project to reach underserved areas and underserved communities and underserved teens with the sport and recreation of cycling,” said Ewing, longtime competitive cyclist and member of the Cascade Bicycle Club. “The tagline we use is, ‘Empowering youth through cycling.’”

Rain, snow or shine, crews to demolish first piece of Alaskan Way Viaduct Friday night

Press Release:
Regardless of the weather, crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) will demolish the first piece of the State Route 99 Alaskan Way Viaduct starting 7 p.m. Friday.

Crews will tear down the nearly 60-year-old northbound SR 99 on-ramp from First Avenue S. The work will take all weekend to complete, including Monday, Presidents Day.

Once the demolition work is complete, crews will race to build a new on-ramp connecting northbound SR 99 to S. Royal Brougham Way by April 1 to avoid substantial disruptions to traffic heading to the stadiums.

“After a decade of talking about it, we’re starting to bring down the vulnerable viaduct before Mother Nature does it for us,” said Gov. Chris Gregoire. “This month marks the 10-year anniversary of the Nisqually earthquake and this significant milestone represents great partnership and progress for our region.”

The aging viaduct, which carries approximately 110,000 vehicles each day through Seattle, is a vital link for commuters and freight haulers.

Stan Lock thanks West Seattle

A recent going away party was thrown for Stan Lock at the Elliott Bay Brewery Pub in the Alaska Junction. As many know, Lock was Neighborhood District Coordinator at the West Seattle Neighborhood Service Center for the Department of Neighborhoods, a position he held since June, 2000.

Due to budget restraints, Seattle has been divided into three regions, North, South, and East, with some positions eliminated

West Seattle is in the South region and includes Southeast, Greater Duwamish, Delridge and Southwest and is served by the South Team Neighborhood District Coordinators, Ron Angeles, Steve Louie, Yun Pitre, and Ed Pottharst. Lock has transfered to the Central region, with offices at 2301 S. Jackson St. (Ron Angeles, equally popular around these parts, is soon retiring.)

The Central region consists of five districts, Central, East, Downtown, Lake Union and Magnolia/Queen Anne) and is now served by the Central Team of Stan Lock, Christa Dumpys, and Tim Durkan.

Club Motor revs up the volume

Offers 6.000 square feet of dancing

West Seattle's Joe Mailloux may be his "real" name, but he is known by many in the local music scene as "Joe Motor". He and son Brian, 37, own Club Motor, 1950 S. 1st Ave., just south of Safeco Field. They have their hands full considering the club has over 6,000 square feet, 9,000 if you include the office and extra spaces, and has a 50-foot bar. They began renting the massive location four years ago, and opened for business one and a half years later.

"We're still the new kid on the block, even at two and a half years," said Joe, with his dog, Harley, a catahoula, gently by his side.

"It's not always easy working with family, but we're getting to do stuff together that a father and son don't always get to do- have a big old rock and roll bar," Joe said. He proudly described what makes Club Motor unique.

"It's like a garage with bar stools, kind of 'wearhousy', kind of rustic. It feels like you're walking into an old roadhouse in Texas. It's big and kind of dirty. It's rock and roll."
