Highline schools take a deep look at teaching English Language Learners

Symposium to include personal stories from students

What are the best ways to teach students who aren't fluent in English? Highline teachers and leaders will examine that question at a symposium on English Language Learner (ELL) programs. Students and teachers will talk about their experiences in the district's ELL classrooms. Educators will present research from across Highline's schools and will discuss plans for next year's ELL teaching and learning.
The symposium will be held March 24, at 4:00 p.m. at the Arts and Academics Academy on the Evergreen campus, 830 S.W. 116th St.
Staff and community members are encouraged to attend.
One in five Highline students comes to school speaking a language other than English. Highline's English Language Learner (ELL) program helps students learn English while they are learning the math, literacy, and other skills they need to succeed in school and in life.

Welch will share service district’s superintendent duties for 10 months

When Highline Public Schools Superintendent John Welch moves to his new job at superintendent of the Puget Sound Educational Service District (PSESD) in September, he will be job sharing.
PSESD's current superintendent, Dr. Monte Bridges, and Welch will lead the agency together for one year with the goals of a smooth transition and uninterrupted progress in serving the region's early learning and K-12 educational needs. Welch will assume solo superintendent duties on July 1, 2012.
The opportunity for this unique and innovative leadership transition is created by the successive retirements of PSESD's deputy superintendent in July 2011 and superintendent in summer 2012, according to PSESD board members. Instead of filling the deputy superintendent vacancy for the coming year, the Board elected to conduct a superintendent search.

Japanese disaster relief effort underway among West Seattle restaurants

Dave Montoure, owner of the West 5 restaurant and West Seattle Chamber of Commerce President is organizing West Seattle restaurant operators to save Sunday 3/27 as a date for raising funds for Japan relief. He said, "Presently, Feedback Lounge, Shadowland and Mission have agreed to some type of fund-raising program, I need to get out and sign up some more."

Montoure, whose background includes time spent in Japan said, "lived in Iwate prefecture, one of the hardest hit areas, for several years and have many connections in Iwate. Most of my close friends are inland (in Morioka City) and were spared from the tsunami. I am getting daily updates from friends in Iwate, and they are asking for help – something that is very uncharacteristic in the Japanese culture and is telling of how dire the situation is on the ground."

If you are a West Seattle restaurant owner or know one and they would like to be part of this effort contact Dave Montoure at (206) 935-1966.

The oldest working real-estate broker in the US dies at 98 years old

On March 10th, long-time Ballardite and the oldest working real estate broker in the United States, George W. Johnson died at 98 years old.

"Up until three days before his death he was still working and drilling me about business," said his son Bob Johnson.

It wasn't until six weeks before his passing that his family and co-workers finally convinced him to stop driving himself to his Ballard office on 15th Avenue.

George W. Johnson Realtors was his passion.

"It was real fortunate to earn a living doing what he so much loved," said Molly Kell, who has worked as the office manager for 17 years. "Few people in this world can say they absolutely love their jobs and he did."

George was born in Wessington, South Dakota, on December 22, 1912, to Danish immigrants. The second of four children, George grew up on the family farm and spent his youth helping his father with the family homestead and learning the value of hard work.

He met and married Clarice A. Scandrett in 1933, while they were both attending a small Free Methodist college in South Dakota.
