UPDATE 3: B-17 "Liberty Belle" could have been saved, says one pilot; Plane's pilot talks to Herald, says fire dept. tried, describes emergency landing

Plane's pilot talks to WS Herald: Fire department equipment got stuck in the mud, but did their best

Story Update

One of the two pilots to land the plane in the field spoke exclusively to the West Seattle Herald Saturday, June 18. His wife, a crew member, also spoke to us:

Seven crew members and volunteers were uninjured when the B-17 “Liberty Belle”, a WWII-era bomber caught fire and landed in a field about 40 miles southwest of Chicago Monday, June 13. The fire occurred shortly after taking off at 9:30 a.m. The Liberty Foundation that owned and operated the aircraft had been giving rides at a small airport in Sugar Grove over the June 11-12 weekend and were on their way to Indianapolis.

Many "Flying Fortresses" were built southeast of West Seattle in Boeing Plant 2. This plane, built in 1945 at Lockheed in Burbank, California never saw combat, but was named after a B-17 that did.

Construction closing SR 520 floating bridge and I-5 ramps this weekend, region-wide congestion expected

Drivers can expect region-wide congestion Father’s Day weekend as construction completely closes the State Route 520 floating bridge and highway and the Interstate 5 ramps to and from Mercer Street in Seattle.

“Whether you’re headed to the Mariners’ games, the Fremont Solstice Parade and Fair or celebrating Father’s Day, we’re asking drivers to plan ahead for major traffic delays on all Puget Sound highways,” said Brian Dobbins, WSDOT construction engineer for the SR 520 Eastside Transit and HOV Project.

As drivers think about alternate routes the weekend of June 17 through 20, they should expect the heaviest traffic midday Saturday and Sunday on I-5 and I-90 heading into Seattle, and on I-405 approaching I-90.

Closure details:

SR 520

Crews will close all lanes on SR 520 from 11 p.m. Friday, June 17, to 5 a.m. Monday, June 20, between Montlake Boulevard in Seattle and Interstate 405 in Bellevue. Details of the closure and detour maps are online. Night work is planned, and neighbors near the work zone are likely to hear construction noise.
All SR 520 ramps in the construction zone also will close, except for the 108th Avenue Northeast on-ramp to eastbound SR 520.

Armed assault suspect arrested in West Seattle

An armed assault in South Seattle on June 12 resulted in a 27-year-old suspect’s arrest on the 5900 block of Delridge Way S.W. in West Seattle, according to Seattle Police Sgt. Sean Whitcomb.

Around 5:27 a.m. police responded to a “man with a gun” call on Seward Park Avenue S. The 22-year-old female victim told police she had met up with the male suspect and he became angry. She left in a car with a friend and he followed them in his vehicle, forcing them to pull over. The suspect got out, pulled out a gun and pulled the trigger but the victim said the gun did not fire. They sped around the suspect and fled. She reported hearing a gunshot as they drove away, according to police.

Later that day the victim called in with the suspect’s location, in West Seattle, and Southwest Precinct officers were able to apprehend him as he left his Delridge Way S.W. apartment.

A loaded pistol was found in his pocket and the suspect was booked into King County Jail for investigation of assault and violation of the Uniform Firearms Act (felon in possession of a firearm), police said.

The suspect’s weapon and vehicle were taken by police as evidence.

Police Blotter Week of 6-13-11

Just breaking stuff, woman’s underwear theft and a burglar vs. burly door incident

Two burglars/vandals were arrested on June 4 for breaking into a school on the 3800 block of S.W. Findlay St. Multiple alarms were tripped shortly after 1 a.m. and when officers arrived they could hear loud banging, glass breaking and “multiple voices echoing through the building.” The suspects initially tried to flee over the schools rooftops but stopped once they realized escape was unlikely. One suspect was cooperative, admitting to breaking into the school because they “just wanted to ‘break (expletive).’” The other suspect was less cooperative, telling police he was just there to play some basketball. Officers noted he didn’t have any shoes on and upon further investigation found a pair of size 12 Airspeed skate shoes jammed into a window to keep it open. The suspect eventually admitted to his involvement (and his shoes’ involvement) and both were booked into King County Jail for investigation of burglary.
