SLIDESHOW: New Admiral Safeway; An advance look

The new Admiral Safeway is set to open at noon on Thursday, August 11 and brings with it high expectations for the neighborhood and the promise of greater economic vitality in the future as the residential component, Element 42, is built and occupied. But first the store must get re-established as a destination shopping experience. Given what the store will feature, that's looking more likely.

The West Seattle Herald will bring you a more comprehensive look just prior to opening after a media tour this week but here's what you can expect at a minimum.

Safeway introduced a new format, called the Lifestyle Store several years ago that includes earth-toned décor, subdued lighting, custom flooring and unique display features to a warm ambiance designed to enhance the shopping experience.

The store features:

  • A very large produce department with a wide variety of specialty and organic produce
  • Fresh bakery with hearth oven for baking bread
  • An expanded wine and beer department with wine cellar
  • A Starbucks with expanded seating area

FREEDOM has the power and energy to change your mind and the world

Documentary film clears up confusion about ethanol and makes a compelling case for it as an oil alternative

The documentary FREEDOM from husband and wife team of Josh and Rebecca Tickell is aptly named because in the context of the film it represents the most significant meaning of the word and gives it depth, dimension and hope. The couple showed the rough cut of the film, it's only Seattle theatrical showing at the Admiral Theater (the third time it's been shown publicly) on Saturday, Aug. 6. It's due to be released at the same time theatrically and on DVD later this month.

FREEDOM is about a journey the couple took that began with a wish to document the disaster of the Deepwater Horizon oil platform and its impacts on the Gulf Coast environment, economy and people. They actually shot that film (which documents among other things Rebecca's ongoing health impacts) and also what the film makers say was, "an incredible coverup," and it will come out in the future. But along the way Josh came to a new understanding about the world's relationship, and this nation's addiction to oil.

Citizen supports Joy Anderson for Seattle School Council

Why I advocate for Joy Anderson:

She is the candidate that understands what our educational community, families and children need. She is a strong candidate not only because she has a child in the Seattle Public Schools, but because she is not focused on one issue, but the issues of 1) how the school closures have overpopulated our elementary schools; and 2)how the costs of portables, food services, the costs of bussing has actually increased costs to the district.

It is funny how people think that her platform is all about school closures. What folks tend forget is that the closure of ONE
elementary school in West Seattle has resulted in overpopulated classrooms, portables on the playground, increased costs to buss our kids all over West Seattle and a huge assortment of unhappy parents and children. The value of education has diminished and we have more schools failing the AYP (annual yearly progress report) due to overpopulation.

Does anyone realize that it will cost up to 10-12 millions dollars to rehab buildings for us to have an additional elementary school for our children to attend? Schools that will not end up in our neighborhood!

Animal Aid & Rescue Foundation or AARF, is representing today at "Woofstock" in Tacoma

Heather Johnson Enajibi and Erin Halter of Animal Aid & Rescue Foudation, or AARF , our doggie rescue friends who seem to hit every West Seattle street fair and fest, are today at Woofstock 2011 in Tacoma until 4:30 p.m.

Woofstock is a large event put on by the wonderful Dugan Foundation. We'll be there (along with over 20 other rescue groups) with adoptable dogs and Merrick goodies to help us raise money for our extensive vet bills. Come enjoy some great music, shopping and fun for the whole family.

Saturday, August 6 · 10:00am - 4:30pm

Location:

Todd Field on the University of Puget Sound Campus
1500 N Warner Street
Tacoma, Washington

Heather and Erin have rescued, and placed, many troubled foster dogs with West Seattle families. Check out their AARF website.

Erin says, " Come by and meet Dug, Wyatt, Daizy and Duke." We assume, but cannot confirm, that these are dogs.

The Riding Reporter: The Dead Baby Downhill

Click on image to start slideshow.

The 15th annual Dead Baby Downhill race took place in West Seattle and Georgetown on Friday, August 5th.

Founded in a small Belltown bikeshop 15 years ago, the Dead Baby Downhill has grown into one of the most epic downhill urban races on the West Coast.

The actual race starts at a different hill in Seattle each year and ends in a massive bike party in Georgetown.

This year's race started at 7 p.m. at the Shipwreck tavern on S.W. Admiral way in West Seattle, where hundreds of cyclists gathered before bombing down the hill to an (at the time) undisclosed after-party in Georgetown.

Cyclists rode a wide array of pedal-powered vehicles from super tall welded bicycles to a multi-person, fire-spitting trike.

Not long after 7 p.m., participants took over the sidewalks, trail, and the right lane of W Marginal Way, surprising many of the motorists.
