Football: Highline wins a tight one against Foster

Highine and Foster went right to the wire in football Friday night, with the homestanding Highline Pirates hanging on for a 42-41victory over the Bulldogs.

Foster pulled within one point with 7.3 seconds left on the Highline Stadium scoreboard, only to have a run by Ian Buckmaster for a two-point conversion -- and the win -- stopped short of the end zone.

Highline clustered together for a lengthy celebration after the game as the Bulldogs came away stunned.

After all, the game looked like it would be win for the favored Foster team from the start.
The Bulldogs jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter, starting with a touchdown with 6:48 to play in the period.

Buckmaster fired off the ball to Anthony Manago for the 16-yard score and Cedric Cooper ran for two points and an 8-0 advantage.

Foster added to the lead with 4:31 to go in the first quarter. Cooper rumbled 46 yards down the right side for the touchdown, but the kick for a one-point conversion was blocked to leave the lead at 14-0.

The Pirates looked like they would be shutout for the quarter, but came through with a touchdown with only 7.8 seconds to go.

What Ballard wants

As of last night, the Tully's location on 22nd and Market joined the many empty store front in Ballard. What was a vibrant corner with steady customer traffic just days ago is now a corner of boarded up windows.

Curious about what kind of business would survive in Ballard (in addition to its many restaurants, bars and burger joints) we posted a poll on the Ballard News-Tribune Facebook page.

Asking the question, "With all the empty store fronts around Ballard what kind of new business would you hope to see next?", we discovered that Ballard still longs for a taste of Scandinavia.

While the responses varies from lingerie shop to a small garden supply store, Ballard would most like to see a Scandinavian bakery/food store.

The idea of a juice bar was also popular among our Facebook followers.

Kentwood aces Mount Rainier in tennis action

Visiting Kentwood raised its Class 4A South Puget Sound League North boys tennis record to 3-0 with a 5-0 team match win at Mount Rainier on Tuesday, Sept. 13. The host Rams now stand at 1-2 league and 2-2 overall.

With Mount Rainier still adjusting due to inexperience on the varsity level and with players recently becoming eligible, the task of defeating the experienced Conquerors (second in the North last year) was truly difficult at this stage of the season. Kentwood graduated one player while the Rams lost five players to graduation from its fourth place team.

Kentwood's Nick Parmley and Jacob Kuhlman quickly took the measure of Phillip Samerack and Tyler Andrews in a 6-1, 6-0, No. 3 doubles win.

Senior Alex Noyes, who qualified for state last season, gave the Conquerors their second victory on Tuesday by outstroking senior Will Desmond 6-1, 6-2 in No. 1 singles. In this match up, the game scores were deceptive due to frequent long long rallies.

Army Corps of Engineers to close Ballard Locks for work Sept. 27

Both the large and small locks at the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks in Ballard will be closed to all marine traffic from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. Sept. 27.

The closure will allow construction crews and dive teams the opportunity to close for the winter the salmon exclusion structure immediately upstream of the locks. The crew will also be doing some work in the large lock chamber. The staff will make maximum efforts to complete the work as soon and as safely as possible.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Seattle District, which operates the locks, installed this interim structure to prevent salmon from being trapped in the saltwater return system.

The structure prevents salmon access to the locks’ saltwater return system and improves the viability of the salmon runs, which use the fish ladder to return upstream to their spawning grounds. The design allows for the doors to be manually closed to screen fish during migration and opened when the salmon are not migrating.

Emergency vessels on an emergency call will have access to the locks during the closure.

Boaters may call the lockmaster on duty at 206-783-7000 to verify that the locks are open.
